Exporting Standard reports directly to Excel

ReportReport

Hi,

We're in the final stages of installing AX 2009 and we've noticed that when running standard reports (i.e.Aged Debtors Report) from any of the report menus that we can't export directly to Excel.

There is an option in the menu bar under file to Export to Excel but it is grayed out and can't be accessed. We've been told that this a glitch in AX and that the option shouldn't be there & to go through the print function & create an ASCII file but this is cumbersome and the report formats can be lost.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I can't understand why the option would be in the menu bar if there's not some way to enable it. Can anyone shed any further light on this or if there's a better work around.

 Thanks

Theo

This is an abbreviation for SQL Server Reporting services. Is not an AX term. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SQL_Server_Reporting_Services

Being new to AX maybe I haven't picked up all the lingo but SSRS?

and a extra little hint. When you save the report to file and you have to give it a name, replace the extension with .xls. Then you can open the file directly from the location rather than having to open excel first and finding the file. I also prefer to save it as html rather than ascii. The formatting is a little better.

And yes, SSRS is the future. It has native excel export.

Not exactly. You might have read in some of the public announcements, that Microsoft would like to use SSRS reports as much as possible. SSRS reports support exporting to Excel natively (with some limitations, probably, I have not played around with it yet).

    Hi all,

As a side note:  The sysExcel* classes are very useful classes that allow you to write data directly into excel files, some custom coding is required however but the option is available. (I am rather surprised that MS gives us these classes but doesn't use them for the base reports however).

I can take an educated guess:  This will be available in future AX versions.

    Happy AX'n.

    Regards.

I agree that it is a gaping hole.  I often use the export to HTML option, rather than ASCII.  I like it better, but it is still not a export to EXCEL.  I also use the get external data function to bring data from Dynamics into Excel.  It does require reinventing the wheel, however.

    Hi Theo,

I asked the same question to our AX Partner and got this as a response.

In AX, the File menu has standard options displayed for everything and Export to Excel is part of the standard menu bar. This option gets enabled only if you are in a form which displays data from a table.  This option is greyed out in report because the report is an output format and not directly linked to a table.Reports can be exported as File only in these formats. You can save the File as ASCII format and open with Excel.  Hope this answers your question.

    Cheers.

    Thanks for your response.

That's unfortunate though, it seems a gaping hole in its functionality which I hope they address in future versions as it's a feature that readily available out of the box with many of its competitors.

    Cheers

Re: Exporting Standard reports directly to Excel
There is no direct integration of AX X++ reports with Microsoft Office Excel in AX 2009. The integration is only for data you view in forms. Since the report display is also a form, the menu is present there. But since it's not possible to retrieve data from there (there is no query, like on forms), the button is disabled. In AX 2009 you would still have to go through the ASCII file option with delimiters. Note, that in some cases you can simply export the contents of a form to Excel, and filter/sort the data there afterwards.
