What is the step to update Power BI report resources ?

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by

Hi all,

Wondering what is the step if we update Power BI report, the PBIX, what should we do after it? I only know that it is on Resources, then in that node, there is the PBIX which if we double click, it will open with Power BI Desktop. Then if we make some changes, what should we do next? Just close, it will automatically updates our AOT ? any other step needed ?

What is the procedure of doing updates PowerBI exactly ?

Or if we have new custom PBIX if any.

Thanks,

    Hi ShaqAX,

For configuring the PowerBI.com integration for Operational Workspaces, then you could go to D365FO, in System administration menu > Setup > Deploy Power BI files.

D365FO will load the different reports available in LCS and you will find the report that you upload into the LCS.

For embedded powerBI, you could build using the entity store. You can build your reports against based on the AXDW database on your development box:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/fin-ops-core/dev-itpro/analytics/author-distribute-power-bi-reports

Once you have developed your PBIX file. You could upload it to the AOT and reference it on a form:

    docs.microsoft.com/.../add-analytics-tab-workspaces

    Hello ShaqAX,

Can you let us know how you configured your PowerBI desktop and how you usually read the data and from where?

Do you have a special BYOD database that you use to analyze your data from D365FO or are you extracting the data in a different way?

Would be great if you could elaborate.

    Many thanks,

    Ludwig

Could you please clarify which way you use to deploy your Power Bi report? If you are using powerbi.com and attach your power bi report in D365 FO, then you will only need to save your PBIX file.

If you are using Embedded power bi way to displaying your power bi report as an workspace by custom, they you will need to re-generate a deployable package and apply this new version to your environment.

RE: What is the step to update Power BI report resources ?

    Hi all,

Firstly, for the way of displaying, is with the "internal" embed, as I'm using AOT Resources. Am not using BYOD but the internal AxDW with Entity Store.

As Will's link provided, I think I no need to Deploy or Upload to LCS, right? as it is for PowerBI.com integration, this is not the "internal embed". And what he said is I think is correct that we upload it to AOT.

So, I think what I'm not really sure is, when we edit the PBIX with Power BI Desktop, then we just save it? it will update the report automatically ? Do we need to upload again to AOT? but how? because the Resources already attached to the same PBIX name, right? how to know that the same PBIX is already the updated one ?

Same thing if I create a really new custom PBIX, then at first I create New Item -> Resources, then select my newly created custom PBIX. This part is done. Now when I did some modification on my PBIX, what should I do? delete the old Resources and Add new again ?

    Thanks,

    Hi ShaqAX,

Yes, for embed PowerBi , you have to re-design it.

RE: What is the step to update Power BI report resources ?

    Hi Will,

Yes, I understand how to design and embed it on workspace for the first time. My question is really only just when we have it already, then when we open again that PBIX from AX Resources, then what should we do ?

Do we need to upload again to AOT ? how to upload it again ? or Do I need to delete the old Resources and Add new again ?

So it is all about updates what already there. There is one thing from Ziyao said that we need to create deployment package again, and agreed on this, but before that, what should we do. So it is after I edit the PBIX and before create deployment package.

    Thanks

    Hi ShaqAX,

You don't need to remove your old resource.

Just upload the PBIX file to AOT and then you can call your new resource by PBIReportHelper::initializeReportControlV2:

    Hi Will,

But how are you going to upload the file to AOT?, we upload the PBIX during create New Resources right?

    Thanks,

    Hi Will,

Yes, actually that is one of my reference also. So it's means to say, every time we have an update of an existing PBIX resource, we need to Add new ?

It seems not right to me, then how many resources of PBIX that we would have ? for actually only one report. Also we need to change over and over again in the workspace form because of the resource name changing.

Or I missed something on that reference ?

    Thanks,
