Dears,

We are implementing Dynamics AX 2012 for Retail Business ... our implementors claimed that the duplicates are not allowed when assigning Product category!

For instance, we have multiple brands that sell the same kind of products .. For example if we consider the Brand as Level 1 and the category as Level 2, we have brand 1 and brand 2 that provide the same category which is perfumes.

Our recommended classification: Brand --> Category -->Class -- > Subclass --> sub-Subclass

Please let me know what is the best practices to define product classification hierarchy allowing duplicates ..

There are logical reason why it works this way - though I can see reasons why it might be nice to look a category called yellow, and then look at a category called women , or a category called handbags, or a category called leather and to be able find a yellow, leather, woman's handbag in either category.

Maybe combining category with attributes will help you.

Ok, not sure I quite understand but let me share my situation with you.

So I have Brands->CatA->CatB

then I have Brands->CatX->CatB

Now when I tried to create CatB it said the "Cannot edit a record in Category (EcoResCategory). Name: CatB The record already exists."

that's the issue am having. so its as if the name is been used as the unique key.

Please help if you can, thanks

Hello.. in fact we used a unique item code but the description can be duplicated. for example, the category code P, with description Perfumes can be concatenated with different brands,, brand codes P-AD , P-CH ... etc..

Dear Colby,

Thank you for your reply.. in fact, we can't do this .. in our example the brand sells different categories .. so for example if perfumes, Makeup are the parents. the same brand cannot be identified as a child to 2 parents !

Any suggestions?

They are correct. In your example, the same category would not be allowed as a child to different brands. If this is in fact your structure, category should be a parent node to child node brands 1 & 2.
