I have been asked by a prospect to prove Dynamics AX 2012 R3 for Retail can handle 4.5 million SKUs. Do you know whether this is possible and where I can find support information?

I recommend you use hierarchies items,,, uses only generic items, which can derive all the different versions,,, with hierarchies can also create accounting integration.
You must also consider the time required to make a closing inventorie if they can load 4.5 million items. And a correct definition of inventory modules.
