Delete Segment Associated with Journey

We have over 400 segments in Real-Time marketing. We would like to delete segments that are no longer needed as they were used for one-off emails years ago. But I am unable to do this because the segments are still associated with a journey. What is the best practice for keeping the number of segments under control?

Also in this example it is saying "Cannot delete a segment that is associated in a journey." but on the bottom rate it says the segment has never been used. I get an error message when trying to delete it.

My response was crafted with AI assistance, tailored to provide detailed and actionable guidance for your query.

If you're unable to delete a segment in Real-Time Marketing because it’s associated with a journey, follow these steps to clean up unused segments while maintaining best practices:

    1. Check if the Segment is Actually in Use

    • Even if the UI shows "never used," the segment might still be referenced in a past journey.
    • Try opening past journeys and manually verifying whether the segment was ever linked.

    2. Unlink the Segment from the Journey

To delete the segment, first remove all dependencies:

    1. Go to: Real-Time Marketing > Journeys
    2. Filter by "Stopped" or "Completed" journeys.
    3. Open each journey and check if the segment is used.
    4. If the journey is no longer needed, archive or delete it.

    3. Archive Old Journeys (Best Practice for Cleanup)

    • If journeys using the segment cannot be deleted, try archiving them:
      1. Open the journey.
      2. Click More options (â‹®) > Archive.
      3. Once archived, try deleting the segment again.

    4. Try Deleting Again After Archiving

    • Once the journey is archived or deleted, retry deleting the segment.

    5. Alternative: Duplicate & Replace the Segment

If the segment is still blocked:

    1. Create a duplicate segment with the same logic.
    2. Replace the old segment with the new one in active journeys.
    3. Then, delete the original segment.

    Prevention Tip: Regular Segment Audits

    • Set up a naming convention for temporary/one-off segments (e.g., TEMP_2023_Email).
    • Review and archive segments every quarter to avoid unnecessary buildup.
