GP Upgrade from 2015 to 2018 test environment

We are trying to upgrade from 2015 to 2018 but want to test the upgrade first. Can I update my TEST GP database that is on the same server? Can I install GP2018 and connect to a play database that is on the same server as the production? Can someone help me what is the best way to test this upgrade?

You are going to need a test server with another instance of SQL. You cannot test just one company as the first database to be upgraded is the DYNAMICS database.
