Hi,
I was wondering how to commence a db sync in Production environment? There is a menu item in AX 2012, but I could not find this in D365FO.

You don't have to db sync in prod and there is no option for you. That happens when deployment happens.
How about DB Sync on Tier 2 environment.
There is also you don't have to do anything manually.
For Tier 2, can I use VS in Tier 1 environment and point it to Tier 2 DB, then conduct the dB sync?
Why you want to do that ? You have option to debug tier 2 from Dev box if you want to . I don't recommend sync from Dev box because your Dev box schema can vary. I tried it couple of times before just to check but its not finished.

You can connect VS to your Tier 2 environment for debugging purposes, but not for db sync. The database sync will happen as part of the deployment, so you don't have to do it manually. Can you please elaborate further and let me know what are you trying to achieve ?
