NAV 2017 - Product Group - kept or not ?

Hi,

 

Microsoft removed Product Group functionality by making multi-Level Item Categories.

 

We are actually upgrading several customers and all of them are asking to keep the old functionality as many reporting and small item related processes are related to this field.

 

The positive point is that the 'Product Group' table and fields are still on the tables but not shown in pages. what's the reason that Microsoft kept this field ? Could we take as an assumption that it will never be removed ?

    As you correctly mentioned, multi-level Item Categories have been introduced and this is the functionality that customers would need to switch to (as it is indeed much better than just a flat product group). My opinion is that in the future, the product group would degrade from functionality. As other members mentioned, it is still kept in the tables and would probably be kept for some versions so far in order to streamline the upgrading process. However I would not recommend to build business logic on old functionality, especially for new implementations.

    reason of the keeping those field is for migrations/upgrade on the system should need those tables

    We don't know what is there in future release of microsoft .I think they have kept those table for data up-gradation from older version to newer version and in upcoming version they will come up with something new.

    My suggestion would be in such cases partner need to convenience the customer to go for new features which will helpful in future upgrade.
