Suggested Answer

Item created with tracking dimension as none.

We have two entities. In one entity, an item was created with the tracking dimension set to Serial number. However, in the other entity, the same item was mistakenly created with the tracking dimension set to None.

Now, there's an intercompany transaction between the two entities involving this item, and as a result, the system is not allowing me to modify the tracking dimension.

Is there any way to correct this?

If there is no transactions were posted for this item, I would suggest to create the new item with correct tracking dimension (e.g., Serial number).
Because There’s no supported way to change tracking dimensions post-transaction without risking data integrity.

We also have 1 requirement to change the inventory UoM after several transaction posted. We raised a Support ticket but they suggest the unit conversion or new item creation.

    Thank you,

Hi there, it's better if you can create a new Product and to overcome this issue in future you can enable the Sync of serial and Batches bw Intercompany orders.

    Hi,

The suggestion is to create a new item with the correct tracking dimension and migrate inventory and open transactions. This approach is tedious but avoids data issues and keeps your system compliant with best practices.

However, in some cases, if the item does not have any inventory on-hand i.e. Stock count is 0 and there is no Open transactions or used in any trade agreements/ BOM,etc and Inventory closing has been run, D365 will allow you to change the value. If you see the field as editable, then you are allowed to change. Please test in the Sandbox to confirm your scenario.
