Dear Experts,

I`m having trouble to modify some reports due to fact Dynamics AX 2012 does not support version of Visual Studio 2012 . Is there a link available for trial version of Visual Studio 2010.

Thanks in advance

V

I believe only Professional and Ultimate versions are supported for AX development. Depending on what version of AX you have, it is either VS 2010 or 2013, you may refer to the AX System requirements documentation for the exact version.

You could try to check the downloads section with an active MSDN Subscription, or see if they are available via your AX Partner or some retail channels.

    Hi Vilmos,

Thank you for your reply. We installed VS 2010 Professional and Visual Tools for AX 2012 , but when I`m trying to edit one of the VS projects from AOT it gives me an error message below.

Is there any additional settings/security we are missing?

    Kind Regards

Different versions of AX 2012 support different version of Visual Studio; make sure you have the right one.

After checking it, the next step is making sure that your AOS is running. Try connecting to it using AX client from the same machine where you have VS. If the client doesn't work either, the problem is in connection to AOS and not in VS.

You have to connect to the correct environment, for which Visual Studio is picking up whatever is in your AX Client Configuration utility's settings. It is not the local client, but the Business Connector entry in the drop-down list.

Make sure your AOS is running, you are pointing to the correct instance and you have refreshed the WCF settings. After that you should be able to connect (if you are using the right VS version for the specific AX version you have).

    Hi Martin,

We are using AX 2012 R3 version 6.3.164.0. and yes AOS is running ok on daily basis. Does VS needs to be installed on the same server with AX?

    Hi Vilmos,

Where do I need to specify these settings to be able to connect to AOS when opening the  report in VS.

6.3.164.0 is AX 2012 R3 without any hotfix. If I was you, I would like to upgrade to something newer, because Microsoft released quite a few feastures and hotfixes in those 2.5 years since releasing R3, Nevertheless your current version does require VS 2010.

No, VS don't have to be on the same server as AOS, but it must be able to connect to it.

    Hi V

AX2012 R3 CU8 (I believe) introduced support for Visual Studio 2013, but if you're on an earlier version of AX 2012, then you will be using Visual Studio 2010 (which can be a hazzle to get your hands on these days).

It also needs to be Professional or higher. The free version does not get you anywhere.

You've already installed Visual Studio Tools, which is part of the Dynamics AX Installation experience. That also needs to be in the mix. Others who may be reading this, if you have the older version (for VS2010) of the Visual Studio Tools installed, it needs to be removed before you can install the new version (for VS2013).

Furthermore, you should know Visual Studio needs valid WCF configuration in order to communicate with AX. So make sure your AX configuration has a valid WCF configuration, and that your current Visual Studio session benefits from that. If that didn't make any sense, have a quick look at this post by Justin Carter:

    Hi Tommy,

I did configure WCF file last night to take resources from our TEST environment, but for some reason it didn't allow me to edit files/reports I needed, they were just sat there in VS. I looked at your link provided and only thing I clicked this morning was configure services, didn't change anything and close the window. Seems to be working fine now.

Edit: I was still unable to deploy modified report. Had to add myself as admin on the server to solve it.

    Regards

    V
