I'm the IT guy for a small retail company that has two stores. We currently have RMS 1.3 installed on Windows XP Pro machines. We have the 2.0 disc's which have not been installed yet.
I have a few questions i hope can be answered...
1. Is Microsoft RMS being discontinued?
2. Can Microsoft Dynamics RMS 1.3 or 2.0 run on Windows 7, 8 or the up coming 10?
3. Can RMS handle chip credit cards processing or is this just a third party hardware issue?
3. We are considering upgrading to 2.0 but i don't think the owner remembers the HQ Client configuration DB server password. Will this be a problem if we upgrade?
Thanks,

Sales ends in 2016 per Scott below, the devices are the ISC 250 and ISC 350 and the MX 860 I believe is end of life but does work. To find other models check the forums or your Microsoft Partner to verify what's being used. Extended support goes to 2021 meaning no major upgrades or new development, Microsoft as far as I know will support it as they always have to the very best of their ability.
Hello Nelson,
Thank you for you question.
1) Yes, Microsoft Dynamics RMS is being phased out. Mainstream support for the product will end on July 10, 2016 and extended lifecycle support will expire on July 13, 2021.
2) RMS 2.0 will run on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 and has passed testing with Windows 10 beta build. Please note that you will need the professional edition of these operating systems to receive support from Microsoft.
RMS 1.3 is no longer supported and has not been tested with Windows 7 or later.
3) RMS does not have functionality for processing EVM (Chip and PIN) transactions, but this functionality is provided via 3rd party add-ins. Both Retail Realm and Mercury Payments have such an add-in.
We have tested RMS with the Ingenico iSC 250 and iSC 260 devices, along with the VeriFone MX860 device.
4) You should be able to make a backup of the database through the Manager program. Please note that you will likely need to install a new SQL instance to be compatible, and they can set a new SA password during the configuration. I would recommend that they make a note of this password and store it in a safe place in case it is needed again.
Thank you,

1) RMS is not discontinued.
2) RMS 1.3 will run on windows 7 32bit. Windows 7 64bit (most common) will not work with RMS 1.3. Also Windows 8 and above will not work for RMS 1.3
RMS 2.0 is supported on windows 7 and windows 8. Since Windows 10 is in beta preview, I can't say if that will work when released.
3) Yes, through several partnerships with processing platforms. Shift4 is an example.
4) Yes, not knowning passwords is a problem. Upgrading should be done by a certified and experienced partner. That are many things that happen during a major version upgrade, which means potential for problems.
If you don't currently have a partner, I can assist you with the upgrade process.
Thanks for responding.
I have this link from Microsoft Support: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle?LN=en-us&x=7&y=14&p1=12198 that says that mainstream support for Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System Store Operations 2.0 will end next year.
1. Is this the whole RMS product or just a portion of it?
2. Would this also include sales of the product as well?
Thanks,
Hi,
RMS is not discontinue
it is my strong advice to appoint a RMS Partner for this kind of work, if you do not have experience with RMS upgrades and troubleshoot this can lead to many issues and down time
below is the link that should answer to your questions
