How to install D3FO (D365) remotely on a server.

Hi All,

I have a requirement to install D3FO remotely on a server.

I have downloaded .vhd file from MS Connect. I have installed this on my system using hyper V. but now i need to install it remotely on some other machine.

- So what is the process to install it remotely on a server?

- Secondly I've seen some people installing it by first converting .vhd to .vmkd and then installing it using VMware. So, is there any difference in both these methods? which one is better for performance?

It's not an installation of Dynamics 365 for Operation; it's setting a virtual machine using the downloaded virtual hard disk.

The process on remote machine is identical as on the local machine, assuming that you want to use Hyper-V inside Windows Server. If you want to use Hyper-V Server, talk to the administrator of the remote system.

VMware is a competitor of Microsoft, offering their own virtualization platform, and it's obviously not supported by Microsoft. I don't have any numbers regarding performance, but I would expect it pretty much the same.

    Thanks Martin for clarification.

I actually don't want to use Hyper-V inside windows server. I want D3FO directly configured on a remote machine, so that whenever we access it using remote server, directly D3FO is open. Similarly as we open any cloud D3FO VM.

Sorry, but even after reading your question again, it still sounds like you described what you did locally and then you asked how to do the same thing on a remote server. And now it seems that all your remarks about VHD, Hyper-V and VMware are unrelated to what you actually wanted to ask. If "I want D3FO directly configured on a remote machine" means that you want to install and configure Dynamics 365 for Operations inside an existing installation of Windows, the answer is simple: it's not supported.

Nevertheless note that I have no idea what you mean by "directly D3FO is open", therefore maybe I misunderstand what you actual want. It will help if you get used to giving us more information. We can't help you much if you don't explain your problem in detail.

I am sorry Martin if i was unable to elaborate my question properly.

Your previous reply actually answered half of what i wanted to ask.

Let me try again to explain my question.

I want to configure a D3FO VM in a way that when ever I access that machine using mstsc.exe (Remote Desktop Connection), It will open in the same way as we open any Cloud VM (Which we deploy from LCS and then we access that VM by given credentials using mstsc.exe).

The other scenario that i don't want is as follow.

I will access the machine using mstsc.exe and then i will open Hyper-V manager within that VM and then i will setup .vhd in hyper-v and then i will start that D3FO vm and will use.

Aha, I see why you're so confused that you rejected the solution you actually need ("I actually don't want to use Hyper-V inside windows server").

If I give you a remote connection to a VM, will you know (or care) whether it's a physical machine, it's hosted by Hyper-V in Windows Server or in some other hypervisor? No, it will be completely transparent to you.

The case you described at the end of your last reply means that you would connect to the wrong machine. You want to connect to the hosted machine with AX, not to the underlying server hosting VMs.

Of course, using Hyper-V in Windows Server is just one of possible options, but it's the easiest one and it does everything you need. Using a different hypervisor wouldn't significantly change the architecture, although it may have some other advantages (licensing, reduced attack surface and so on).

    Thanks Martin,

I have almost understood your answer. Please tell me if I have understood something wrong.

I will configure D3FO VM on a server with IP = 'X', and when i want to directly access D3FO VM from my PC, i will not connect to IP = 'X', i will directly give the IP and credentials of D3FO VM in mstsc.exe and it will open D3FO VM. I am right??

If your AX VM has a host name or IP address 'Y', create remote connection to 'Y'.

'X' is clearly a different machine where you explicitly don't want to connect, therefore creating a connection to 'X' makes no sense for you.

You do the same all the time. Most, if not all remote machines where you're normally connecting to are virtual machines; you just don't think about it and you don't have the address of the hypervisor.

    Thanks Martin,

You have described very well (Y)
