Workcenter type tool

Hi,

Any suggestions on how to manage tools that have a lifetime both financially and inventory (i.e. tools that can produce say 50.000 pieces)?

I am thinking of creating workcenter type tool instead of placing it in the BOM.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Rolly

I guess, a slightly detailed description will help.

Have you in the meantime considered 'Service items'?

    Hi Crispin :)

We have different threading tools for making different screws. Each tool has different "life-time" i.e. their capacity until scrap fx the 50.000 pcs mentioned above. Making it into an "item type = item" and putting it in the BOM line did not really work out because it is as if everytime a production is RAFed, it consumes a whole tool which makes it difficult to manage the right cost price. Perhaps we are just doing it wrong.

And no, I have not considered "service items". Could you specify your suggestion on this?

    Thank you in advance.

    Best regards,

Firstly, you can certainly consider "Stocked Service Item". This allows you to use it with BOM for Production.

You will find this very interesting www.erpsoftwareblog.com/.../dynamics-ax-service-items-bills-material

Second, your challenge is dealing with different lifetimes, and arriving at an average Price for the Finished good / average cost Price for the BOM. I suggest running a few Production orders with multiple sets of this tool (Service item) and derive an average number of times one Unit of the Service item is used for a Production order. This will be a good sample data to calculate an average cost Price.

You can always match it with the actual Purchase over a period of time, to see if the Prod costs have to be adjusted or not..
