Word Template - Replace SSRS Report ?

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport

Hello Folks.

I've been assigned a task in Dyanmics 365 but it's more clear to say CRM 2016 On Prem. The plan is to migrate to the cloud. One impediment to this is long ago several reports were created which can be fired against specific data views. So this basically means you create a filtered set of data and then choose the option at the top to run report. The end result is a pretty simple document/letter for use in sending to clients. These reports were made using SSRS(.rdl) and SQL (not fetch). As you all probably know SQL can't be used in the "cloud' version of CRM/Dynamics so it has to be converted to FetchXML.

Long story short replacing this is a nightmare. I'm sure some dedicated CRM guru could do it but I have no compulsion to become anything other than a CRM tourist. To digress... even for 200k I wouldn't spend my days poking at this thing. I'd be a turnip of a developer after only a few years.

So anyway it has been suggested that perhaps I could replace the custom report with a custom word template. It took me only a short time to make a prototype of this and it works but it works in the context of an individual entity record. I would like to use a word template in the context of a filtered query or view I guess is what they call predefined queries.

I tried to do some searching and research but consultants fill all the results with "step 1 how-to's" trying to garner business for working on this thing and I'm coming up with nothing.

Is it possible to run a word template against a query/view? I hope this makes sense? Any resource you could point me to would be massively appreciated.

Doug

Nevermind... it seems the option I was looking for showed up after another try. As an aside when you create a template it names the file with apostrophes around the file name ('filename.name') and then it is unable to upload it's own file until you rename it. I ran into this before with CRM... typical sloppy execution on everything excepting the billing lol. Have fun CRMers till we meet again :)

    Doug,

I'm afraid that's not doable without some additional development.

In your scenario I would recommend consider 1 of 2 following options to replace your reports:

    1. Usage of PowerBI.

    2. Enabling of Data Export Service and building of reports on top of Azure SQL replica for your reports (you would be able to use SQL Queries there).

Ok I'll keep it in mind. I see I can't run the template vs an entire data set but if I select one item from that set it can be run. I believe for now this will satisfy requirements. If not I will absolutely be referring back to your suggestion thank you.
