I am an intern in a company that specializes in manufacturing. We sell NAV. To earn my keep I'm looking to heavily specialize in writing reports. I am having a bit of a time trying to figure out where to focus my resources. As the title says can someone please point me in a direction. Where do I start? Are there any good outlines?
Thanks

Hi Matt,
Agreed with others.
In my opinion, data is the god when it comes to visualizing reports. So, Excel is a great tool to start with. If you have used the Aggregate Functions, Pivot Tables, Comparing Multiple Datasets and etc., you know to visualize the data in a way that your requirement fulfills.
So if you can visualize your data, its just a matter of embed the DataItems and writing your logic.
Hope it helps :)
Hi Matt,
Report designing in NAV is bit of tedious process but for learning you can start from here
msdn.microsoft.com/.../dn757103(v=nav.90).aspx
As well as you need to have understand of C/AL programming also for generating reports
To be an expert in NAV reports you have two ways to go:
1) Search for everything by Claus Lundstrøm (blogs and videos and courses etc)
2) Forget about standard NAV reports, and get your company to buy either http://www.fornav.com/ or https://www.idyn.nl/products/nav-development/document-creator to get better report capabilities in NAV.
best you search in the blog section for blog posts about reporting issues. you will learn there the most of typical daily issues and their solution.
in that forum you can ask, if you have special questions. many members are experts for nav reporting issues.
in addition you can read the base docs as alexander suggests.
also buying a book is a good idea, e.g. [View:https://www.packtpub.com/big-data-and-business-intelligence/microsoft-dynamics-nav-2015-professional-reporting]
but ... as i know, most of the typical (nav) developers don't like to read ... much. ;-)
As usual, I would recommend to work with the latest versions of NAV, available. If it is NAV 2016 in your case, it is good.
Report building is certainly what would be always demanded in NAV, so selecting that focus would not be useless. You can start with materials, available on official source:
msdn.microsoft.com/.../hh879045(v=nav.90).aspx
msdn.microsoft.com/.../dd338686(v=nav.90).aspx
Also, lot of material is available on YouTube, e.g. www.youtube.com/watch
Then, consider purchasing books. There are not so many (in fact, very few) books for NAV.
The best way to learn is to participate in real projects, where practical tasks should be resolved. Ask questions here, we would be glad to support your learning path.
