Anyone using the new Unified Developer Experience (UDE) in D365FO? Feedback?

Hi everyone,

Wanted to know your expericnce with Unified Developer Experience (UDE), which Microsoft introduced for Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations earlier. It promises a significant shift in how we approach development.

I'm curious to hear from anyone who's already adopted it:
  • How has your experience been so far?
  • Have you found it to be a game-changer in your day-to-day work?
  • Any issues or limitations you've run into?
  • Is the local dev setup truly smoother compared to traditional VM-based approaches?
  • How you are managing Retail development (without self host model)
Would really appreciate any insights.

Moved to the Finance forum, as this is related to Finance and Operations.

So far It's mostly positive, it's significantly faster than some CHE environment's I have been using and much closer to how a TIER-2+ environment works (I.e. the availability of micro-services etc.).
As a customer, I am however concerned about the cost of these environments as they consume Dataverse resources.

Local DEV is significantly smoother for me, but it highly depends on hardware.

I don't do retail, here other users can correct me. But as far as I can see retail development is still not possible.

    Hi,

I'm using the UDE environments almost daily. The advantages for me are:
    - Environment up an running 24/7 at the same "cost". No need to shut down the environment (CHE) for cost saving.
    - No need to start a remote desktop session for being able to open the AOT with Visual Studio
    - When I just need to review something, I can easy and quick open Visual Studio with the source code.
    - Faster compared to the CHE's I had.
    - As I have database storage available on PPAC, the environment is free for me.
    - Online environment has same performance as production environments.
    - No option to develop something which has dependency on local resources. This ensures that all you develop, once correctly tested, will work on sandboxes and in production.

    Possible issues and limitations
    - You need to have capacity available on PPAC to be able to deploy an UDE environment
    - Retail development is coming, but not possible today.
    - Meta data search is not correctly working on my environment.
    - Installation of some micro-services as available on Tier2+ environments aren't available for self-service deployment yet.
    - Each version will download a lot of metadata which can fill the hard-drive. You would need to check for cleaning your hard-drive.
