Hi all.
We are investigating options of setting up a distributed AX2012 installation across multiple physical locations due to connectivity and speed issues. Can anyone point me towards any documentation regarding the options that are available?
Kind Regards

Hi Martin, Thank you for your input. We are definitely pushing for RemoteApp. Their hesitancy has been that they struggle with simple things like saving files and emailing reports out of Outlook etc... We were able to setup the "Export to local Excel" functionality, but are still investigating other options to make RemoteApp more seemless.
Microsoft recommends terminal server or RemoteApp and I think it's what you really should use. AX does many calls between client and server and if you don't have really low latency, AX won't run fast.
And trying to implement replication for two rural locations (and not some world-wide deployment) really doesn't seem worth even considering.
Hi André
Thank you for your answer and your suggestions. I agree with you entirely and also foresee the same issues mentioned regarding duplicated Record IDs etc... I'm really looking for some form of official documentation on what one's approach should be in order to backup our recommendations to the client.
I believe we will be able to resolve this by analysis of networks, indexes, VM setups etc...
Hi Jonathan,
I have seen a question before where someone tried to replicate 8 sites using SQL replication. This caused many issues as duplicated record ID's were issued which coud not be replicated and data loss was a result....
The only option would be having different instances and have a consolidation on the ledger. Problably you can integrate e.g. orders using AIF (and Biztalk). But three installations also means three licenses...
I would suggest to see whether there can be some improvements related to the speed.
Hi Andre.
Basically we have a client with 3 physical locations. One is an urban area and the other 2 are quite rural. Their main operations are at one of these rural sites and thus host the majority of their IT infrastructure there including AX. They have quite good communication lines setup but still struggle with speed issues accessing AX from the other 2 sites. They are quite insistent on using locally installed clients instead of terminal services for a number of reasons. They have asked us to provide them with details regarding replicated systems at each site that sync together. Our experience has suggested that this is not really an option with AX (apart from Retail solutions), but I was hoping to find some official documentation to back that up or to present them with the options.
We are looking into diagnosing the true cause of their speed issues and also seeing if we can move them over to terminal services, by finding workarounds for their reasons for using local clients.
Hi Jonathan,
Can you elaborate on your question? There are some installation options described in the AX installation guide, but I guess you are looking for other options? Which. scenarios are you considering?
