Dynamics AX 7 (Rainier) - Few Development Queries

Hello all AX enthusiasts,

This has been spreading among all those who are trying their hands on to the AX 7 development. I also have few queries regarding this which I thought of asking here.

I am trying hands on at the VHD having AX 7 that is shared by Microsoft across the globe. I have gone through and practiced several tutorials provided at lcs.dynamics as well as Office Mix. But still I couldn't get few of my queries resolved.

Queries:-

  1. Hosting Html in AX Form:- In AX 2012 we used to host a WPF UserControl in an AX Form. In AX 7 Managed Host Control is not present and we need to use Html to show that. My question is how can I add an Html control in an AX Form in AX 7? I mean is there any thing like WebView or IFrame, where I can pass in an url and it will navigate to that url? Or is there any control where in I can host an html page (like mypage.html) ?
  2. Create Dialog box:- In AX 2012 we used to create modal dialog boxes using Dialog class. How to do the same in AX 7? Can we create such windows which can popup on pressing a menu item? What is the class and how to go about it?

Issue I faced in the VHD:-

  1. No FMLab folder in my VHD:-  There are a lot of tutorials which referred a folder called C:\FMLab but in my VM that folder is not present. I couldn't find the folder in the entire VM. How to get that?

Please provide the answers. It will help me and lots of others.

For HTML, you should look for the labs on "extensible controls". IFrames etc are risks for cross-site scripting and other attacks.

Dialog boxes, the new way to do this is "fly outs" - essentially a dialog showing up on the right side of the screen. For example, when you create a new customer on the customer list page, you'll see an example of this.

I will check where the FMLab folder is on the VMs, the location was probably not updated since the lab was written.

In addition to Joris' answer: The FMlab is probably available on Microsoft connect and/or the Yammer AX feedback group. In several VMs it is indeed not included.

Did you also check for more information on the AX wiki site? There is information how to do developments in the new Dynamics AX. http://ax.help.dynamics.com

Hi. We had the same issue with the WPF controls. The only supported way is to reimplement your control with htm, jss and css. Tutorial on extensible controls from LCS is very useful for understanding the new paradigm. Although not updated from CTP6.

    • Can you kindly tell me where to find the FMLab folder? Without that folder in place I cannot proceed an inch in the Extensible Controls tutorial. Its literally blocking my job, as there are no other tutorial available on this subject.

    • Secondly, my requirement is that I want to make an independent html page which will display only an Hello World text and a button clicking which the text changes to Hello AX 7. Now is there any way to display this Html in an AX Form. Basically I want to add this Form as a Factbox in some other pages like Vendor list or Customer list etc.  I went through a control in Form called HtmlViewer, but that only takes in html text. Instead I want a control which will take the html file, i.e. file browser will browse that html file and display it in the Form.

    • Again in the same line, lets say I have an url (say https://community.dynamics.com), and I want to browse to that Url and display the rendered content inside the AX Form. Is there no way to carry out this?

    Hi Sagnik,

The FMlab can be found on Connect: connect.microsoft.com/.../DownloadDetails.aspx.

You need to have access to this to be able to download it. You can try your partnersource/customersource account. Or maybe someone else from your organization has access to this.
