Can't convert existing NAV 2015 CU11 database after upgrading to CU18 or CU19

I have an existing NAV 2015 CU11 system working happily but after updating the binaries to either NAV 2015 CU18 or CU19, I am unable to convert the database to the new version. I have tried two methods of installing the CU (a) replace the existing binaries with the new ones via a copy and replace, and (b) uninstalling the old version and installing the new version - and the convert database error is identical.

After installing the new binaries, I have attempted to convert the database by connecting with the Development Environment and after the normal warnings, an error occurs when attempting to connect to the database...

---------------------------
Microsoft Dynamics NAV Development Environment
---------------------------
The following ODBC error occurred:

Error: [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 11.0]Connection is busy with results for another command
State ID: HY000
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

The user running the Dev Environment has db owner rights on the NAV database.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to resolve this?

Thanks

Russell

Try adding a SQL Server ODBC data source:

Also check free space on the database drives.

Have you restarted SQL & NAV service and checked if it works?

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I have restarted the SQL service and it makes no difference. The NAV service can't be started and the Windows event log gives a very clear message that the database needs to be converted via the Development Environment to allow the service to start.

Thanks. I tried creating an ODBC data source as user DSN as per the article, and that didn't help. Similarly a System DSN didn't help. I am not sure I understand why the ODBC source would help, nor any of the other suggestions in the same post. So right now I am still unable to convert the database.

I have found the answer to this problem (thanks to some assistance from a support engineer ate Intergen in Christchurch, NZ). The error mentioned occurs when the database to be converted is on a SQL failover cluster. If the database to be converted is a more normal single instance SQL database, then the conversion process completes without error.

I should have remembered we struck a similar problem when upgrading from NAV 2009 to NAV 2015. So, if you are using a *** Microsoft *** failover cluster for your SQL server, you may have the same issue. Interesting that a failover cluster is standard Microsoft technology.
