If you checked that means you can not use this account in general journal, but you can set up this account in some posting profiles.
If you unchecked that means you can use this account in general journal, and you can also set up this account in some posting profiles.
In general use this option to some special accounts, such as AP,AR,asset,inventory.
This option to ensure the specific sources of account, to ensure that the integration of financial and business.

As Mattguo mentioned the field is usually checked for accounts that are used for automatic transactions that occur in AP, AR, inventory, etc. and ensures consistency between your main and subledgers. I would recommend that you do not allow 'ordinary' finance users making changes to this setup as it will result in reconciliation problems.
