How to bring existing environments (production and UAT) to LCS

Posted on by 30

My production server (AX 2012 R3, CU10) and UAT have been implemented (on azure) without creating LCS project. It is updated with CU10. When ever I try to update with latest CUs, direct me to login LCS. I have  the customer source account. But there is no clear instruction as to create LCS on existing environments. Please help me on how to update cu13 even without creating LCS, if it is not possible, direct me how to create LCS on existing UAT and Production server.

The layer code is always associated with specific AX license. So in this case, the VAR work would need to be done in a system that has your partner's AX license installed.

Assuming your AX license doesn't grant VAR dev rights and dev code. The layer codes can be seen in Partner source along the AX license code.

    Hi,

After installation of CU13, you have to start the client with lowest layer. My customization is (HR and Payroll) done under VAR layer. In order to start client on VAR layer, you need the security code. This development is done by previous partner (we changed the partner). Is it possible that current partner in a position to provide security code for VAR layer in order for me to complete CU13 update. Please give your feedback on this regard.

RE: How to bring existing environments (production and UAT) to LCS

Yes, I understand the situation. I joined this company recently. In this environment there is no 3 environments are created, only UAT and production. Partner has done customization on UAT. (only minor customization such as reports and one or two forms) UAT memory is only 8 GB. Partner has been earning money without delivering. So immediately I change the partner, renewed the AX license with new partner. Now we are discussing the upgrade, it seems that there are no competent people to do the job. Anyway, I will take into consideration the points that you mentioned. Thanks for your help.

Also, since you updated your AOS in prod, you must update also all other binary components. Otherwise your system is in an unconsistent state and you might encounter issues.

RE: How to bring existing environments (production and UAT) to LCS

You need to start this process in dev, definetely not in UAT and ABSOLUTELY not in Prod! You are clearly not following the process in MS documentation. Asking help on forums will not substitute reading and understanding (and following) the documentation.

A dev/test system should have at least 16GB RAM if you install everything on one server.

Follow AX installation guide to install the components. Then copy prod databases (model + business) to that system. Change all environment specific setup in the data before starting the system. Google for "ax 2012 copy prod to test"

The more you tell about your situation, the more worrying it sounds. Don't you have an implementation partner who knows AX? If not, your business is at risk and I can't recommend installing the CU until you have knowledgeable people on board, and have your environments and ALM (application lifecycle management) processes set up properly. Fix the basics first before continuing your attempts with advanced stuff. How did you end up in this situation, with  no technical people who know the system?

I recommend you reach out to your local Microsoft representative and ask recommendations about local partners. Then reach out to a partner and work together from there. That's the only sustainable solution for your situation.

I, or anyone else, can't make your processes and systems work via forum discussions.

RE: How to bring existing environments (production and UAT) to LCS

Thanks for the reply. I thinks I need a proper UAT, my existing  VM is having only 8 GB Ram which is not sufficient, getting an error during compilation "out of memory". I have an another VM (empty), but it is very difficult to make a instance as production. Last night I tried on the production after taking proper backup. I could restore the production as it was but AOS Binary is updated (kernel), as you said Kernel update is not making any harm. Production is running smoothly. Please help me to create test (UAT) environment as production.

Microsoft support can help you with product bugs but I don't think they will walk you through the process. However I'm sure someone can do it as freelance work if you don't have knowledge in your organization. Prepare to pay perhaps 2 weeks of work, depending of the scope and amount of customizations in your system.

RE: How to bring existing environments (production and UAT) to LCS

How did it "fail twice"? You definetely need a developer for the upgrade. And the installation guide should be quite detailed.

First you should update binary components such as AOS, Client and all others. Then Database = x++ code. Then build, and start resolving code upgrade conflicts, merging changes from SYP to your customization layer. Once that's done, compile and generate CIL. Then start data upgrade. You must complete the steps without errors before moving to next step.

You should get help from someone who has experience of this, or you will face a lot of problems.

In AX2012 installing CUs is quite complex and require time and work. And you must follow the correct process. It's not rocket science, though.

Whether your system is in Azure or not - and deployed from LCS or not has no impact in this process.

RE: How to bring existing environments (production and UAT) to LCS

    Hi all,

I tried to update CU13 on AX 2012 r3 (unsupported), failed twice. then I tried to update CU13 only by selecting Data export import framework module. Cockpit process went on nicely, then during database synchronization, start errors appearing. I marked it as completed, then proceeded until check list of upgrade completion. Then start running the client, still check list is opted. I ignored and continued. But can not access purchase orders, GL Accounts, different errors appeared.

My question is can't we update CU13 without technical (developer) person.

Secondly, is it possible to open support request on this issue.

Is there any proper step by step instruction as to update CU13 (not the installation manual).

    Please give your feedback.

RE: How to bring existing environments (production and UAT) to LCS

Thanks for the reply. Why I am going for cu13, in order to resolve my data export import utility (DIXF) working. Due to a bug in CU10, it is not working. cannot import data from excel. It was mentioned that issue has been resolved in cu13. This is the only purpose that I am upgrading to CU13.
