Move D365 Marketing from TEST to PROD

Hi!

We currently have the D365 Marketing APP running on a TEST-Environment, and now we want to move it to PROD. However, since we only got 1 license, as stated in the documentations, we need to uninstall the current marketing app (free the license) and re-install it on PROD, right?

I read the documentations but I am not quit sure how to start, could you let me now if it is the right approach?

  1. Update D365 Marketing
  2. Reset the TEST-Portal to free the license (for D365 Marketing Events)
  3. Create on-demand backup of the TEST-Environment
  4. Uninstall D365 Marketing on TEST and re-install it with the D365 Marketing Wizard on PROD
  5. Restore previously created Backup?

Thanks for your help!

    Hi,

May I know which type do you mean by TEST-Environment?

Here are all the types of environment listed.

    Types of environments

If your environment is a trial one, it cannot be converted into a production one.

Reference: Can I convert the trial to a paid license?

If it is another type, please refer to the following documentation:

It is a sandbox environment. I will have to uninstall Marketing (we only have 1 license) and restore a Backup on Production Right ?

    Hi,

Please kindly note that copying to a production environment isn't supported.

However, you can easily switch any environment from sandbox to production, or production to sandbox, at any time.

If you'd just like to convert the sandbox environment to a production one,  please refer to the steps in the following documentation:

Change environment type - Power Platform | Microsoft Docs

    Hi,

If you encounter a license limit during the backup process, you will need to uninstall first and reset any Power Apps portals connected to the uninstalled Marketing app to free up the licenses.

Hi yes that is the case. One question: With the created backup of the current marketing environment, all the solutions etc will be transferred to the converted sandbox environment right?

    Hi,

The backup only contains all organizational data, solutions, apps, and customizations will be present, but no interaction data, insights, or previously uploaded files will be available on the restored system.

If you'd like to backup the interactions data, please refer to:

Prepare for analytic reporting with Power BI (Dynamics 365 Marketing) | Microsoft Docs

The documentation also states the definition of the Profile data and Interaction data.

    Hi,

I'd like to confirm if the issues have been solved.

If there is any further doubt, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Nya I got another question.

Since the way of creating a backup of the whole environment and restoring is not an option for us and not recommended by our developers, we will go the following path:

    1. We purchase another Marketing License (Sandbox)

    2. Move the current one to Production (Uninstall/Reinstall)

3.Import the necessary solutions to the PROD-Environment

4.Install the new sandbox license to our dev/test environment

So basically, nonetheless we need to uninstall Marketing and re-install it. We hope that with the imported solutions it will work as assumed. Since we already have a portal on the PROD-Environment we just need to link it with Marketing right in order to automatically host Events etc.. right?

    Hi,

Would you please tell me that if you're unable to convert your Sandbox environment to a Production environment because you already have a Production environment?

Backing up important content from the Production environment to Sandbox and then converting Sandbox may also be an alternative.
