Unable to change Inventory to 0 (to be able to add Item Unit of Measure)

Posted on by

My customer created some new items without adding the "Item Unit of Measure" to the item card, and then somehow managed to perform positive inventory adjustments for those items in the Item Journal, but when I try to use either the Item Journal or Physical Inventory Journal to run a negative inventory adjustment to reduce the inventory to zero (so I can add the Item Unit of Measure) I get an error saying:
"Base Unit of Measure must have a value in Item: No.=XYZ. It cannot be zero or empty."

How can I change the Base Unit of Measure on these items cards?

Am I missing a setting that requires Base Unit of Measure for the Item Journal that was off, but somehow got turned on?

Version: NAV 2016 CU13, W1

    Hi Dewey

If You have done Postive Adjustment & I'm sure you haven't selected any Unit of Measure code during the transaction,

so Try to post the negative transaction also without putting any Unit of Measure code.

after posting you will be able to add the Base Unit of Measure code.

But I recommend you to create the new item by blocking this item, otherwise, that will give you average costing problem in future.

    Thanks

    Indika.

Dewey, I've encountered this before and fixed it.

Please contact your partner to have an expert fix this for you.

    More information:

This all depends on how deep the transactions go. If there has only been one or two positive adjustments AND NO other warehouse transactions, NOR consumption, NOR sales transactions THEN this can still be fixed fairly easily (but by an expert only).

You need an experienced Database Administrator (DBA) to update the record in the table(s) where it lives without it's unit of measure. DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF! I'm just telling you how it could be fixed if there is no other way to do it. There has to be an analysis on which tables are affected - and which related tables are also affected.

You should try Suresh Kulla's suggestion first. He is an expert and knows his stuff. If that doesn't work:

    An example is as follows:

Suppose the said record exists in the [Warehouse Entry] table: Your DBA will locate the exact record that is missing it's unit of measure. He/she will identify the exact [Entry No_] and update that record alone by setting the Unit of Measure field with SQL DML code and a carefully written WHERE statement. He/she will also need a working knowledge of what other tables may have been affected and whether or not changes need to be made to any other ledgers.

You are in a bit of a jam since the Item Card is still missing the value too. Once the warehouse entry record and related tables get fixed then you might be able to add the unit of measure to the item card the proper way in NAV.

HOWEVER, your DBA might try it in reverse and set the value in the Item Unit of Measure table first through a similar process (and make sure the same is set in the Item table). This will be the judgement of the professional working on the issue.

Please contact your partner to have an expert fix this for you. Good luck.

    Dewey,

So do you want to make inventory 0 or you just want to update Unit Of Measure for the Items, irrespective of inventory?

As suggested by Amol, a developer can bypass the error for time being till you update Unit of Measure for the Items.

Please verify, if you find answer helpful.

Are there blank any UOM in unit of measure table ? I think you need to add the Base Unit of Measure on the Item Card by using a processing report so that it will not validate,  then you perform your negative adjustments.

  • RE: Unable to change Inventory to 0 (to be able to add Item Unit of Measure)

No, these items do not have a Base Unit of Measure, and I have been trying to add one, but I get the following error when I try to do that:

"You cannot change Base Unit of Measure because there are one or more open ledger entires for this item."

...but I can't figure out how to remove the ledger entries for these items so the Inventory becomes 0 (zero).

    Hi,

You missed on first step only by not setting up the base unit of measure and i am surprise how system allow to pass positive adjustment.

Now out of box you can take help of developer and comment piece of code /program. (This is not recommended but sometimes you need to do the same)
