Moving to a New Server Inquiry

One of our customers had a ransomware attack so they are going to move to a new server, They had a performance issue previously that was mainly related to Inventory reconcile and partially related to overall performance that were solved by releasing a service pack on GP 2015 that solved their inventory reconcile issue and they also had gone into some troubleshooting for their infrastructure. one of the recommendations they were given from Microsoft is to have MDF & LDF on different physical drives as they previously had it on different drives in the virtual machine so they were pointed back to the same physical drive on the host machine.

They have a new IT team now and they were asking is this recommendation remains the same when they move to the new server because they wanted to place both MDF & LDF on different drives in the virtual machine again, They were asking if this will affect performance or if there any update regarding this recommendation taking in consideration that one of their databases is about 150 GB now.

Yes, from what I can find, you can significantly increase performance by having the MDF and LDF files on different drives, thus the resource load is spread around.

The key is the drives should be physically separate, making a partition isn't going to gain you much.

I don't know if there is much of an update regarding this recommendation as it really isn't a Dynamics GP specific recommendation but more of a SQL Server recommendation for any application or databases, really.

For Dynamics GP, if there was a fix via a service pack for Dynamics GP 2015, that fix should be brought along in newer versions of Dynamics GP as well, as all versions and patches are inclusive of what came before them.

    Thank you

Derek, we normally put the ldf files on the fastest drive array by allocating space from the host by pulling them from the fastest pool of drives. Would you agree that makes sense? Now speed is not the only factor. Redundancy is also important. You should build your RAID configuration to insure maximum redundancy. We normally bring in IT people who will evaluate what is truly needed and then present options. Finally, budgets will dictate what can be put in place.

Thank you Derek for your reply, I totally understand and agree with you that this is a SQL Server recommendation for any application or databases and not a Dynamics GP specific recommendation.

And yes the fix for Dynamics GP 2015 is brought along in newer versions, but this fix wasn't really related to MDF & LDF or where they were located, It was mainly related to how the inventory reconcile process code was written in Dynamics GP, Microsoft had to modify the way some stored procedures were written for better performance. This was their biggest issue back then as it took them more than 70 hours to run this process before code change and that went down significantly after that modification.

That MDF & LDF recommendation & also some other recommendations were given for other minor issues related to performance too & I think that overall performance was enhanced after they followed those recommendations.

I think they should keep following those recommendations on their new server too, But their new IT team are looking at it from a different point of view. They think that if they place MDF & LDF on different drives on their virtual machine that will reduce the time taken for their backup process & that it's better for them without considering other factors related to their environment.

The only information I really have on this is mentioned in the Dynamics GP performance white paper:

    2. Isolation of the database files

    • Log Data Files (LDF)

It is recommended to always isolate the Microsoft Dynamics GP database log files on a dedicated RAID 1 or RAID 10 volume. This is to ensure that SQL Server can always write to the log file as fast as possible with no contention from the MDF Input/Output (I/O) activity. This will have a positive impact on the performance of SQL statements (inserts, updates, deletes) in the database because SQL Server can continue to the next statement as soon as the log is written.

    • Master Data Files (MDF)

It is recommended to always isolate the Microsoft Dynamics GP database data files on a dedicated RAID 5 or RAID 10 volume. Ensure you have adequate disks to handle your I/O load, otherwise latency will increase once the disks are saturated.

    • TEMPDB (MDF and LDF)

It is recommended to always isolate the TEMPDB database files (MDF and LDF) on a dedicated RAID 1 or RAID 10 volume. Performance may also benefit by creating 1 data file per CPU for TEMPDB as recommended in the article below.
