Recommended edition of Visual Studio for Dynamics CRM 2016 development

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello Guys,

Could you please provide info on which is the recommended edition of Visual Studio for Dynamics CRM 2016 development?

Right now we are using VS 2012 premium, I want to know that which edition(Enterprise/Premium/Professional) is recommended by Microsoft?

Few days ago we tried to use Professional edition of VS but Developer toolkit was not compatible with it?

Have you tried to install the developer toolkit on a VS2015 community edition?

If it fails for other versions of VS you could try to follow this guide:

if you need to open existing projects created with the developer toolkit you need to install it, however as I wrote before you can create plugins and workflows without the developer toolkit, it's a tool to help the development, it's not mandatory to use it.

Thanks Guido, but without the developer toolkit installed visual studio is not able to load plugin and workflow projects. So if I use community edition how to load plugins and workflow projects any suggestions on it ?

for CRM development you can use also a community edition (if compatible with your company size for licensing) without the developer toolkit, the toolkit is an help, is not mandatory.

    According to this page:

    marketplace.visualstudio.com/items

    Visual Studio 2012, 2013, 2015 is supported => I recommend using 2015.

I personally do like this extension made by Jason Lattimer much more and works stable in our environment:

    marketplace.visualstudio.com/items

also running with Visual Studio 2012, 2013, 2015.

I belief it works with either of the versions you mentioned.

    Thanks Yasser,

we are thinking from cost perspective as well, If the whole functionality including developer toolkit works with Professional edition then why to go for higher edition.  So its like I want to know it everything works in Professional edition of Visual Studio?

    Hello Nilesh,

We are currently using Visual Studio 2015 Enterprise Edition (Update 1) and it is working fine.
