After googling a bit I still do'nt understand what is the use of Version Number ) field ? Is it a simple numerator?

Version number Is a System field, unless you're doing data migration or change tracking without using the audit feature, you won't need to use it or mind about It.
It stores the information about every change in a table to a database Row record level.
If you have an account A with version number X and someone made an update to A, the version number Will change to Y.
