Power BI embedded development with entity store

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by

Hi,

Please can someone guide me on how to develop and move the Power BI report as deployment package or other ways to SAT and Production using entity store.

I have gone through below links which tells about creating report using cloud hosted environment. However, it doesnt tell, that after we create a deployment package and deploy it to SAT/Prod or other cloud hosted vm, then are there any further steps required to view this report connected with the respective environment entity store.

Thanks

I have the same question (0)

    Hi JeffGreenrc,

You mentioned "below links" , you forgot to attach them.

When development is done, to deploy the Entity store in  production environment. By creating a deployable package for the model and then uploading the package to the Asset library in LCS. After that, the newly created aggregate measurement needs to be refreshed in the Entity store,  going to System administration > Setup > Entity store. And need to upload the new Power BI report to the Asset library in LCS under Power BI report model asset type.

    Hy Jeff,

as I know if I you develop a new embedded report based on data from entity store, or customized entity you should add the new report (pbix) as a resource to your deployable packages. We recommend not to change the original aggregated entities and reports, instead copy the aggragte entity classes and the pbix files and customize as you need. They should be part of your package you deploy. There is no need to deploy the reprorts via LCS, as embedded reports should automatically be deployed to Power BI embedded service the first time when they are called from User through GUI.

If you need data from other data sources as Dynamics 365FO (only direct query works) or you need to have the reports in PowerBI Servcie available to consume without Dynamics 365FO, then you can import these reports into LCS. Afterwards you have deploy the reports from inside your D365FO environement (UAT, Prod, ...) to Power BI Service using "System Administration/Setup/Deploy Power BI files". If you deploy this way the D365FO data source will be adopted to your current environement at the moment of the report deployment.

After this you can the consume the PowerBI Reports inside PowerBI Service (without Dynamics 365FO) and share within organization or individuals. This needs Power BI pro LIcenses as I know. Furthermore you can this deployed reports then integrate in D365FO using personalization (Options "Open report catalog", Open dashboard catalog" or "Open tile catalog", this works on most of work spaces). This way we can visualize data form outside Dynamics 365FO inside the application, e.g.  Third Party data from Logistics or Production plant.

    Hi,

Thanks for the responses. Here are the links which I forgot to add:

By following the above links, I believe i can create Power BI Report using Entity Store.

Can I use Cloud Hosted Environment and Local VHD both for the Power BI report development?

I am still not clear that what steps needs to be taken to deploy the new Power BI report to other Cloud Hosted Environment/SAT/Production.

What I understood from above responses is that, following steps needs to be taken:

    1. Deploy the Deployment package.
    2. Refresh the entity store.
    3. Go to the workspace where the new report is added.
    4. The workspace is opened and shows new Power BI report.

Please correct the steps. Do i need to any steps in between?

    Thanks

    Hi JeffGreenrc ,

Creating a deployable package for the model and then uploading the package to the Asset library in LCS.

Refresh newly created aggregate measurement in the Entity store.

Upload the new Power BI report to the Asset library in LCS under Power BI report model asset type.

Deploy Power BI files in Dynamics 365. The application handles data source mapping which means that no additional steps are required to point the new report to the target database.

Another option to embedded custom reports is to create new Analytical Workspaces.

Can i create and view Power BI report embedded in workspace using both cloud hosted and local vhd?

You can't currently access analytical workspaces and reports in Dynamics 365 Finance + Operations (on-premises)

There is a "hack" how to use embedded PowerBI with Azure Hosted VM or local running VM: The essential is to have the AXDW Database on a Azure SQL Database. This is required that the PowerBI embedded service can pick the data, This is not (easy) possible if the AXDW is in a local Database. And note "PowerBI embedded Service" is not equal to "PowerBI Service", this are different things.

To configure embedded PowerBI inside D365FO you can follow this guides

Enable Power BI Embedded in cloud hosted Dynamics 365 finance and operations 8.0 + - Dynamics 365 Finance, SCM Archive (nuxulu.com)

    PowerBIEmbeddedConfiguration.pdf – OneDrive (live.com)

It worked for me in a local VM as well as in a Azure hosted VM. But not sure whether Power BI Embedded Service works the same with all tenants.

    Thank you for your responses.

I am still getting error in deploying the Power BI Workspace template. I use the below links :

Not sure what is the reason. The second link is an old one, Last Documentation from Martin Wimmer using Powershell script works for me. PowerBI Workspace has to be deployed in the same Azure region as your PowerBI Tenant. To see where your PowerBI Tenant is installed, go to PowerBI Service, use Question mark (see upper right corner) and then Info.

Please can you let me know which link should i follow to deploy it using powershell script
