Using Work item queue for workflows

Anyone that can explain (or point to blogs etc) explaining how Work item queues are used for workflows.

Both setup in a workflow and practical examples for users?

Thanks.

It's well documented in TechNet, so why not start there. e.g.  https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg731875.aspx

You can't use this feature for  approval steps in a workflow - use a queue only for review steps. A Work item queue is a collection of documents that requires processing. Every work item queue has users assigned to it who are responsible to monitor the queue and to process those documents. The user who is assigned to a queue can complete any of the tasks in the queue.

From the queue a user can pick something (a document, a transaction) , and self assign it and then becomes the reviewer of the document, or transaction . The document  is then out of the queue, and it status goes from “un-assigned” to “assigned”.

A work item queue group is a collection of queues for work items.

Trying to make a queue assignment rule, but system says always that a record already exists? Is there a number sequence behind that can be change or some error in system?

Unfortunately not much help from my side, but I also experience the same error message despite never having created any queue assignment rules.

Interestingly enough when I go into Work item queues and click "New", the new record that I haven't even given a name yet shows three assignment rules that I have no idea where are coming from.

Did you manage to figure it out in the meantime?

No, I didn't get it working then (or recently). May need to try again....
