    I don't know of a way.  It's easy, of course, with a business rule; I just implemented that today as it happens.

    Could you use your own status field?  Make it a calculated field based on the value of whatever other fields you want to use.  

    It wouldn't be the same as actual inactivation but might give you the functionality you need.
