SSRS version of GL trial balance summary is extremely slow

Using GP 18.2.1060 we have a client trying to run the GL Trial Balance Detail and Summary. When they click on the link to start the reports it will take over a minute just to appear and if they try to change parameter values it takes just as long. Their AR and AP reports are fine. They are primarily GL users and have tens of millions of records in the GL2000 and GL3000 tables. Does anyone else have a similar number of records and experience the same sluggishness?

    Hey Richard-

Thank you for your post! :)

I've not seen support cases come in with this issue, however this is not to say others in the community are not experiencing this issue.

Does the end user have better performance when running the report for a subset of accounts vs. all?

What version of SQL are they leveraging? Was this issue first reported after their most recent GP upgrade?

While it may be a long shot, you could try to re-deploy these reports.

Does the same latency occur when running the report on machine were SSRS's databases (SQL Server) are held?

How about when running the same report via Report Builder?

Hopefully if the above doesn't shake out a solution, someone in the community with a similar data set can offer their experience.

Wishing you the best day ahead!

Nicole, this is SQL 2019 and they remote into the GP/SQL/SSRS server.  Just bringing up the report takes forever. When you change any parameter it also just sits there. These folks are a financial investment company and only use the GL. There a probably 100,000,000 millions records in the GL20000 and GL30000 tables. I was wondering if the number of records is playing a part in this. Once you set the parameters and click run the speed is fine.

    Hey Richard,

Thanks for the quick feedback on this.

So I've done more digging and did find a few instances where performance was impacted with the GL Trial Balance as a result of several accounts being used/available (Account Drop down list).

What was needed in those instances was hard coding the accounts being used on the report. Maybe this is something that can be leveraged here as well?

To modify the report, you can go to the SSRS Report Manager site, and click on the drop down next to the SSRS GL Trial Balance Detail or Trial Balance Summary Report, then select Edit in Report Builder.  Once Report Builder is installed and the report is opened, you can expand the Parameters folder.

Once you have expanded the Parameters folder, right click on the I_cStartingAccountNumber parameter, and select Parameter Properties.  Click on the Available Values tab in the Report Parameter Properties window, and select None.  Then click the Default Values tab, and select No Default Values.  Click OK.

Repeat this step for the I_cEndingAccountNumber parameter as well, then click the Save button in Report Builder.

I hope the above helps out.

    Let me know either way!

Wishing you a wonderful rest of your day!

Nicole, I do all my reporting using VS and SSRS extensions. Is there a way to correct this report using this tool or does it have to be done using Report Builder?

    Hey Richard,

    Happy Tuesday!

I personally have not and reached out to some colleagues on the GP team and couldn't come up with a good set of steps in order to do this.

I would recommend using Report Builder, however you can certainly try using VS and/or SSRS extensions.

Anyone else in the community tried this modification via VS and/or SSRS extensions that can chime in?

Wishing you the best day ahead!

Nicole, are these reports part of a project or are they just a series of rdl files? Where can I find them?

Nicole, what happens if we remove some of the ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ strings? Are these meant as wildcard characters?

    Hey Richard-

    Thank you for your update.

if you go into the SQL Server Reporting Services, you should see the option to download the report under the ... on the specified report. This would download the rdl file.

I don't see the same Ã¿Ã¿Ã¿Ã¿Ã¿Ã¿Ã¿Ã¿Ã¿Ã¿Ã¿Ã¿Ã¿Ã¿Ã¿ strings in my GL TB report, however I understand these to be wildcard characters.

Nicole, this just came in from the client after I made the change. Did I go to far? Apparently he cannot specify segment ranges now.

(I only want divisions 001 through 010, segments 11000 to 24000) I would be unable to do that. Its actually not even working if I wanted ALL of a certain segment. See below for example.

    Hey Richard,

    Thanks for the update.

What I would suggest that as the hard coded numbers are not working as needed (at all in this instance), then I'd make them editable when generating.

Once you have expanded the Parameters folder, right click on the I_cStartingAccountNumber parameter, and select Parameter Properties.  Click on the Available Values tab in the Report Parameter Properties window, and select None.  Then click the Default Values tab, and select No Default Values.  Click OK.

Hope this allows the end user to now utilize the report and then manually key the accounts needed vs. the drop down option/hard coded accounts.

I look forward to your update.

Wishing you a wonderful week ahead!
