Has anyone attempted to do a mass change to employee IDs?

Our HR Module was implemented with leading zeros in the employeeID due to our external payroll setup. We are now looking at what impact it would have if we were to reload employees and place a leading 1 ahead of the existing number so it would still map to payroll. We have just launched FinOps, however, so there are already invoices etc attached to some employee IDs.

Has anybody attempted to do this kind of change? Or do you have any insights on what impact it would have? Has anybody used a secondary ID field for interfaces that might have different requirements (my previous company did this due to a payroll need to change ID when legal company changed)?
