Consult Logistics: Three scenario's for stock location capabilities of AX?

Posted on by 7,435

Hi,

I am wondering if AX has next capabilities for warehousing/ logistics.

Scenario I: Allocate fixed locations to an item (or item variants) without using dimensions like height, width, length. Every stock positions hold fixed items. So if a location is for 5 items, but only 1 item is present, the location is filled with air. If you do a stock counting you can go to the assigned locations and just start counting.

Scenario II: AX allocates 'randomly' a location that suites the dimensions of an item based on the size of the location in the warehouse and the items already present there. Stock can be randomly spread around the warehouse. Every location is filled as most as possible. However, if you lose something, you need to look all around the warehouse.

Scenario III: The user bring item X to a location Y and then AX knows/ remembers that the item is there. In this case, the user can put own logic and have AX follow how stock is kept in the warehouse. So if location A is full for items X, then the user can select location B and put away there. Ax merges items x with locations A and B.

    Hi,

Thank you for your detailed response. It seems that option 2 is not available for us (Warehouse Management II). For counting purposes this would also be difficult to handle by a human. Option 3 seems also to be a lot of work since then you need to tell every time what item goes where. If you would have a barcode reader with bar codes attached to the locations that would be a great option for the 'random' storage solution.

However, I have not much space for a lot of items which change every 3 months...so that is quite a lot of work to handle. Or either creating manually picking zones or telling AX manually where items should be located..If an item is solved, will it then still reserve the location ? I have to think over again. I think every business would require a scanner and a flexibile way of storing items (>8.000 per year, not even taking every item on stock, but drop-ship).

Selecting 'randomly' which item could be stored in an empty location of size x,y,z is a couple of lines of code. What is so special about 'Warehouse Management II'? Do you know a scanner solution for an acceptable price other then the 40.000 USD I have read on some web sites?

Yes, AX can handle all of these scenarios.

    1. The picking location is unique and will only accept one item. If you need a number of locations then you can set a store zone to include those locations and only allow one item to be stored in it. AX will then suggest you put them in that location.

    2. The store zone can contain a number of locations and allow a number of items to be stored in those locations according to size. (you may need to block the pick location if you only want to use random storage) This is warehouse module 2. AX will then suggest you put them in the location with room available.

    3. You can manually put stock in any location.
