Electronic reporting configuration methods when using RCS

Posted on by 452

Reading most of the documentation in the Electronic Reporting branch of the Finance and Operations documentation, and what appears to be the relevant sections of the Globalization Studio section, I get the impression that to work with Electronic Reporting models and configurations between a development environment and production environments we are to:

  1. Set up Configuration Provider in an ERP instance in Electronic Reporting (ER)
  2. Set up RCS and connect that to our ERP instance in ER
  3. Obtain Models from Microsoft Global RCS
  4. Manually by hand prepare application metadata, to use with the already created and provided Model from Microsoft Global RCS. Export as XML.
  5. Upload the prepared application metadata from the XML file (which looks a LOT like the work of creating a data model) to RCS.
  6. Derive and configure Data Models, Data model mappings, and Format configurations in RCS.
  7. Every time you want to test you have to complete the version in RCS, and import it into your ERP instance, then run the report and check our output.
  8. Repeat step 7 for all your edits to your template, which will be in the 100's of edits resulting in 100's of completed versions in RCS.
  9. When finally done you can then import your final RCS repository configuration into your production environment.

Do I have that right?  I've already mastered using ER in an ERP environment to generate report outputs for our Free Text Invoices.
But it appears if you want to move your ER work to another environment, you're supposed to have done all this extra setup.

Does anyone have any general experience using the RCS repository with ER configs for Finance and Operations and can comment on this?

P.S.: In going through the step by step example at Access application metadata by using ER configuration, I see this zinger on top of what I've listed above: /When needed, you can extend the existing set of metadata and then export
the new completed version of ER metadata configuration. You can then import it to RCS, and update the prerequisites of the configured model mapping configuration referring to a new version of imported metadata configuration./
So looking at my step list above, if you need other data you have to go back to my step 4 above.  Either this is very complicated or I'm missing something.

Note I'm not looking for links to any of the following microsoft documentation pages:

Oh FFS. Lol. Always changing.. just when I think I've mastered it and it's quirks... along comes something new.

Watch this community for my posts relating to Globalization Studio in the future.. haha.

    Hello all again,

I had a discussion with another experienced support professional today, and he confirmed that in general the approach I've shown here is the way we're expected to work.

But with my comment below where it seems that you don't need to do 'Application Metadata' if you have a connected application setup, then the workflow seems to go like this:
    1. Set up Configuration Provider in an ERP instance in Electronic Reporting (ER).
    2. Set up RCS and connect that to our ERP instance in ER (Related links from RCS ER page, select 'Connected applications') (Also set your Electronic reporting parameters).
    3. Obtain Models from Microsoft Global RCS.
    4. Derive and configure Data Models, Data model mappings, and Format configurations in RCS.
    5. Connect the configurations to the target ERP insntance via the connected application selection in the Configuartions page on the right of the window.
    6. Every time you want to test your format output you have to complete the version in RCS, and import it into your ERP instance, then run the report and check your output.
    7. Repeat step 6 for all your edits to your template, which will be in the 100's of edits resulting in 100's of completed versions in RCS... good thing you can delete the old ones!
    8. When finally done you can then import your final RCS repository configuration into your production environment.

I've been continuintg to work using RCS and I can report I've clarified one thing in my question above:
About the Application Metadata.  That appears to not be requried if you can successfully connect one of your ERP instances, and make sure you select that on the configuration page:

Would love to hear about anyone else's experience with this.
