Version: Dynamics AX 2012 Feature Pack
I have a client that takes 20'+ tubes and cuts them into smaller lengths. Each BOM is set up with a standard long length tube. However there are times that once production has already started, they run out of the standard length tube and want to substitute another length tube in it's place. Does standard AX allow a BOM substitution once a production order has status of started. If so what is the correct way to accomplish that?
I have tried adding substitute item in test environment and am having trouble. Picking list journal and RAF journal are set up to post at RAF stage. System is not switching to the new BOM item even though original BOM item has zero inventory in picking location. Is this switch not allowed and could that be why the posting issues are occurring? Anyone have any advice or suggestions on how to accomplish on the fly BOM substitutions?
Thanks in advance for any guidance.

I have the same question (0)Hi Lynn,
I don't believe there is a way to control alternative items in BOM's when out of stock as standard. It's often the case planning need to foresee this imminent stockout and create a new BOM with the substitute item, valid from the predicted stockout date.
I would advise in this instance manually picking the additional qty of the substitute item, then accepting error upon RAF so AX doesn't demand more of the zero inventory item.
Kind Regards
