The future of D365 F/SCM developer VM after the Unified Developer Experience Implementation

I am looking for information regarding the support of OneBox developer VMs after the full implementation of the Unified Developer Experience (link) and the change in the deployment process for such environments.

I am particularly interested in the planned deprecation of LCS at the end of 2025 with the complete transition to PPAC.

Will there still be support in 2026 for:

a) Cloud-hosted VM environments

b) Local VM environments (VHD)

?

Will these environments lose support and no longer be possible to use? Are there any official announcements on this?

Microsoft has confirmed that LCS will be deprecated by the end of 2025, with the transition to the Power Platform Admin Center (PPAC) as part of the Unified Developer Experience. While there hasn’t been a clear-cut statement on the future of OneBox developer VMs.

Cloud-hosted VMs will likely not be supported beyond 2025, as the move to self-service environments eliminates the need for manually deployed VMs. Instead, building automation pipelines and cloud-based development are the focus.

Local VMs (VHD) support is expected to phase out, as the new model emphasizes cloud-based ALM and GitHub/Azure DevOps workflows. Running F&O locally on a VM may still work for a while, but it won’t be the recommended approach.

I guess it’s time to start adapting to the new cloud-based workflows.

@Alia21 I have been trying to find an official post from Microsoft about the deprecation of LCS by end of 2025, and I have not been able to find anything. Would you kindly point me to a resource which would confirm this?

To be honest, Microsoft doesn't seem to have a well-defined transition plan at the moment. They've mentioned that migration will begin in 2024 also, but there's still no official or comprehensive communication available. That said, it's important for us to start assessing the potential impact and planning how infrastructure and development activities will be managed. I don't think there's any need to panic right now, but we should definitely begin preparing.

Microsoft needs to provide new and updated information on this. Being in the middle of major D365 FO & CE project the lag of documentation,  updated timelines and what tools will be provided to automate the process are really important to us.
