Dynamics 365 Portals - Upgrade Customization in safe way

Posted on by 50

Hi All,

I'm planning to customize Customer Self Service portal and I'd like to understand what is the better way to do this in order to make the Microsoft upgrade safe.

I see that there are two types of Portal updates: The portal solution update and the Portal website host update

The portal website host  update is automatically deployed by Microsoft.

The main modification could be done on

  • theme.css
  • Page (introduce JS/HTML)
  • Web Template (change HTML/JS)

How these modification must be done in order to be maintaned on the Microsoft portal website host update?

Microsoft, in the portal upgrade, automatically merge the modification maintaining the customizations?

Regards

Vincenzo

    Hi Manoj,

    Thanks for your answer.

However I was referring to what I had to keep in mind in customizations to be upgrade safe.

I think that all customization are data registered in Dataverse in the my environment. My question was "Microsoft could be upgraded my customized web template/page template/page/css if I modify (not add newone) it?"

    Thanks

    Vincenzo

    Hi Vincenzo

In order to build the custom web pages. You need to make the customization in following areas:-

Web Template --> Page Template -->  web Page.

Web Template :- You can write all your custom page code here (HTML, JS, jQuery, Web Api )

Page Template :- Associate Web template to the Page Template.

Web Page :- Associate Page template to the Web page.

and add all the css related code in the theme.css , so it will auto render the css class/id to the web page. As theme.css will load in the header so your code will get apply to the entire web page.

    Custom page:-

    Thanks,
    Manoj.
