SSRS reports get no data from tables

ReportReport
Posted on by

Hello,

in one installation we have the problem that the SSRS reports get no data. In AX the temporary tables are  filled correctly but on the report nothing or the message "No data available" is shown. The reports affected (in fact all we have tried yet) are completely standard reports without any modification (e.g. invoice, consolidated picking list). In my development application the reports work without problems.

The SSRS is installed correctly, we have uninstalled it and reinstalled it with now effect. The CIL is generated completely and without errors, the reports are also deployed without problems (several times). I've compared the user rights of the service account of the SSRS for the AX database with my development application and found no difference. There are no error messages neither in the Windows event log neither in the SSRS log files. The only remarkable thing in this context is the error message "Login failed for user 'R8\svc-aos6proxytest'. Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database." But there is no relation to failed report calls, i.e. this message appears every few minutes in the event log, independently if a report should be printed at that time or not. Maybe there's no connection between this error message and my problem, I just wanted to mention it in case there is a connection.

Regards
Patrick

Ok, lets start with the easy things. How do you open the reports? From inside of AX or with a browser?

Please check if this problem only applies to company specific reports or not.

In AX Standard there are some reports only displaying data form one spcified company and some other reports which are displaying all data form all companys.

If a report has a AX_Company parameter, this report is company specific.

If you get the error message "No data available" only for the company specific reports, please check if the user has defined a default company in the user options.

Also, when you get the message "No data availbale" your security setup should be fine. If there is something wrong with the security setup of your user you should get an Login failed error inside the report windows when the report is rendered insted of "no data available". Security check are done befor accessing data or tables.

At first I want to apologize for the late reply. I was quite busy and didn't get an e-mail about a reply here...

    Now to your questions:

The reports are started from inside AX

It applies to both, company specific and not company specific. Some not company specific reports work (e.g. chart of accounts), some not (e.g. worker resumé). However I’ve found no company specific reports which works. But during the further inquiries I’ve found reports where I get the errormessage “Either the user, XXX, does not have access to the Dynamics AX database, or the database does not exist.” (report “Procurement and sourcing -> Reports -> Statistics -> Vendor -> Purchases in the past periods) and reports where I get the errormessage “Reporting framework error: Dynamic packed query not found.” (report “Customers”).

Besides the DAT company we have only one self-created company. All users in our application have this self-created company set as default company.

As it’s the test application for our live-application to come all users have assigned the role "System administrator"

    Patrick,

Do you have any other AX or SSRS instances running on same server?

If yes, check each instance is configured properly to its assosiated SSRS.

    Hi,

we had installed a second instance of SSRS but removed it because it didn't work and wasn't necessary. But that didn't change anything. And we have a second AOS running on the same machine, there the reports work. However I'm sure that the setup of the SSRS is correct, at least there were I can check it (in AX itself, in setup files I've found and in the registry). The problem seems to be that the AX-application contacts the SSRS correctly but the callback from the SSRS goes to the wrong AX instance/AOS. One prove for that assumption is an errormessage which appeared a few times and which refers to the services port 8202 which is the port of the second AX instance, correct would be 8201. I haven't found any place where this port would be mentioned in connection with the first AOS, at every place where I have found any setup information for the first AOS the correct port 8201 was mentioned.

    Hi Patrick,

Just out of interest, If there is only one SSRS instance, how does it know about second AOS?

Is there a place in SSRS where you mention about second AX config?

This question is more of my information purpose only, probably won't help with your issue.

    Hi Nag,

we have two folders in the SSRS instance (just a different folder name in the setup in AX: \System administration\Setup\Business intelligence\Reporting Services\Report servers, field Reporting server options\Microsoft Dynamics AX report folder). As AX knows the folder name every AX instance can access the reports via the correct path (\AX instance folder\report). So from this side there can't/shouldn't be an influence of one AX instance to the other concerning the SSRS access.

I tried using different folders across AX instances, and it didn't work for some reason.

I will give another try. Could be something from my end.

    Thanks

    Hi all,

I have setup second AX instance which is using default SSRS instance but different folder.

I have created a new report folder under "BI Tools > Report servers" and deployed all standard reports into new folder.

However when i run reports on second AX instance data comes from first AX instance database.

    Am i missing something?

    Thanks

    Hi,

after some additional investigations and tests I've found the reason. The SSRS doesn't use information from the report called from AX or the folder the report is located in for the call-back connection. It uses a registry key on the database server: below the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dynamics\6.0\Configuration\ one or more AX configurations are stored. The key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dynamics\6.0\Configuration\Current determines which configuration is used. This key is already used during the installation of the reporting service extensions. So it is not possible to use an SSRS on one server (independently if it's one SSRS-instance with several folders or several SSRS-instances) for more than one AX application in parallel because the back link points always to one AX application.

    Hi Patrick,

Exactly. I didn't think you can use same SSRS instance for two different AOS instances.

I might have misunderstood your earlier post.

Did you say you are using single SSRS instance for two different AOS isntances by publishing reports to two different report folders? And two different SSRS instances were not needed in this scenario?

    Nag
