What does mean to work as an _architect_ with Microsoft Dynamics AX or NAV 2013?

I have experience in enterprise and solutions architecture in financial organisations. Surprisinly, I never dealt with ERP systems. What would be in scope responsibilities for an architect regarding Microsoft Dynamics AX  or NAV 2013?

    This term is used loosely and I have seen it mean different things in different situations.

    Generally, there could be an infrastructure architect (what servers, how many AOS, where to put the database...), a technical architect (how to technically implement customization), and a functional architect (architect the solution - how the system needs to be configured and operated in order to best meet the requirements).

    I have not seen these three types of architecture performed by a since person.

    My experiences align with Zvika's.

    I've seen the infrastructure and technical architect performed by one person, but never the same person as the functional architect.

    My suggestion is to keep the three seperate. They are all three major areas that require too much deep-dive knowledge for one person to master.

    @Zvika

    I think that an infrastructure architect is not specific for Dynamics - it is just another application with expected load and bandwidth, security and robustness.

    Functional architect in this interpretation is nothing more as a configuration specialist. There are not solutions. A solution, IMO, would be what to do to provide a 'Click-n-collect' functionality: 1) define what it is; 2) define what it needs; 3) where; 4) whom for. For example, Tesco in the UK interprets 'Click-n-collect' as 'reserve today - pick-up tomorrow' while in Argos it is 'reserve today - pick-up when reservation completes'. I can stay out of the shop door, make reservation, and come inside for the pick-up.

    Unfortunately, I do not understand your technical architect role - what does mean 'technically implement customization' vs. performing another configuration?

    @Asser

    I'd say that it has to be a technical architect who defines requirements to infrastructure (who realises them is irrelevant - may be an architect or a technician) and functional architect.

    The functional architect (in addition to what I said in response to Zvika) has to verify technical configuration of the product for implementation of certain functionality. Would you agree?

    There are two main type of architect normally found in Dynamics AX.

    System Architect

    This is typically a technical person and normally encompasses the infrastructure and technical side of AX. This person is normally responsible for the technical system design and the overall development of the system.

    Solution Architect

    The solution architect is also normally a technical person, but someone also with some functional understanding. This person is normally responsible for the overall solution, to ensure the functional design and the technical requirements come together and will work.

    With all that being said these roles are often over used, and people have these titles but do not have the skills or knowledge to perform the roles.
