Publishing Navigation Pane Options to a group of users

Hello,

Is there a way of publishing navigation pane options to a group of users?

My aim is to try and use the navigation pane options (hiding tabs) to help lock-down what the users can see on there screens, however, we have over 100 users that I would need to do this for. As far as I'm aware the only way you can change the navigation pane options is by going into the user and doing it manually, which isn't an option due to security and time everytime we have a new user to add.

I've personalised the navigation pane options window so that the users cannot edit or see anything, this was easy enough to do with all users because the consultancy company we are using has a mod that enables us to publish screen layouts (I've already questioned them on publishing nav pane options).

I know this is not an ideal way of locking down users, however, I am using security roles on top of this. This is just an extra way of tidying up what users can see.

Also if anyone else has gone live with AX 2012 and has managed to customise their own security roles, by making new privileges, using permissions and modifying access levels (diving in the deep end of user permissions) I'd be very interested in talking with you. My colleague and I have spent many hours on creating our own security roles with custom permissions etc, and we regularly meet roadblocks and scratch our heads for hours trying to figure out why it works in one screen and not the other etc. We have looked for resources online and have no luck whatsoever - we do question, Surely it can't be this difficult?

Many Thanks,

Josh

    Hi Josh,

I have done many complex things with the security in AX2012. This is far beyond the standard administration form of security roles and the security development tool.

I cannot follow your story completely. Can you send some printscreens to make it more clear to me?

Thanks for getting back to me André.

It looks like we'll have to forget about locking down users in this way.

From my experience of security roles, permissions etc it seems that it's very much a trial and error job. My colleague and have been tweaking permissions on my test user, then I'd check if I can see that screen, post that journal etc. Should it be like this or have we gone wrong somewhere? We've looked online and found no resource that really goes into any depth regarding permissions.

    Thanks,

    Josh

    Hi Josh,

If you really understand the concept of the AX2012 security, you can do magic things. If you have access to information source (informationsource.dynamics.com) you can  download the Security Development Tool, which will give you some insight in granted permissions per role. You can also develop or customize roles with help of this tool, but I prefer the security role form or the AOT. With the SDT you can also test a role without creating a separate user.

I only use the SDT for having more information and testing roles.

If you are tweaking permissions, note that one permission can be included in multiple duties and thus will affect multiple roles. The same applies for tweaking duties.

I try to use as much as standard duties for creating a role. If it is not possible, you can copy the duty and use the copied duty in your role. Then you can disable some permissions.

If you need to change the default access level, you can create a copy of the permission (or create a new one) and use this one in a copied duty as well. In this way you know that other roles will not be affected by changing some permissions or duties.
