How do I get past the error: "Unable to open dictionary "?

This is for GP 10.0 and SQL Server 2008.  The customer is moving everything to a cloud solution but would like to have access to this original database.  His 2003 server totally failed.  It's now on a Windows 7 Pro machine. My customer has backups of all his SQL tables including his large business data file and the Dynamics.bak file.  I seem to have restored these in SQL Server Management Studio but when I try to run GP Utilities, I get the message: "Unable to open dictionary :C:Program Files/Microsoft Dynamics/GP/Dynamics.DIC."

After researching online, I have edited the dynamics.set file but still get the error.  FIrst, I just changed the path from Program Files to Program Files(x86) which is where the original file is located.  Then, after further research, I changed the path to a local path instead of what looks like a UNC path.  I did the same thing with the DynUtils.set.  Something I did must have had some effect because I'm now getting the same error but now it's pointing to the correct folder (x86.)

So, I'm guessing this is something a bit more basic.  I can't seem to find instructions on how to restore a Dynamics installation.  Any pointers would be appreciated!

Did you install GP 10 ore simply copy files? GP needs to be installed into SQL. You cannot just copy databases and the program folder. Do you have the GP install media?

Along with what Richard mentioned, only the forms or reports dictionary files should be being moved to a different location than the GP directory where the application is installed. We shouldn't be moving the main dictionary files to another location.

That said, I'm thinking that we're copying the GP directory from one machine to another and on the machine that is being copied from, the GP directory is located in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics\GP\ directory which the message is specifying, and it may actually be installed in the default C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics\GP\ directory, but the location and path of the install can really be whatever the installer decides at the time.

Yes I, though the owner no longer had the original media, I purchased a fresh copy (believe it or not!) on eBay.  But I'm wondering if I should try reinstalling it.

Do you think I should try reinstalling?

    From eBay? That's interesting.......

I'd probably be a bit cautious if you got the media from eBay.........

While we don't have the GP 10.0 files online any longer as that version is no longer supported by us, if you need the GP 10.0 DVD, create a support case and we can get you that DVD and/or any MSP files you need for the service pack/hotfix to get to the correct version and build of GP 10.0.

Others in the Community may be able to assist also..........

    Thanks

I could also supply a copy of the GP installation media. The big issue here is that GP must be installed. You cannot simply just copy folders. This is not Quickbooks!

Thanks for your generosity.  The copy I bought was in the original shrinkwrap case complete with EULA and everything.  But it's been a while since I installed it so I'm a little sketchy about files.  I don't remember copying the original folder from the C: drive of the server.  (The server had a RAID1 C: drive and a failed RAID5 where the original data resided.  (The RAID5 had apparently been limping along on 2 remaining disks so when one of the disks died, that was that.)  So I'm thinking I should re-install GP?

This page has install steps for GP. These will be a bit different then GP 10, but the basics are all there.......... GP 10 just won't have some of the additional configuration for things like Web Client/Service Based Architecture (SBA) mentioned in the article.

Thanks for your help.  I tried a repair install which did nothing to change anything.  I then uninstalled GP 10 and reinstalled it. I now get a new error when I start up GP Utilities:

Your current SQL Server is not a supported version.

     Req: Microsoft SQL Server 8.0

     Act: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (SP2) - 10.50.4000.0

You need to upgrade to SQL Server 8.0 before continuing.

I searched this error and found that I need to upgrade to SP5 at a minimum.  After looking into that, I was able to find the MS page for the upgrade but no link was supplied (the page said that if no link was available, I needed to contact my administrator or Microsoft.)  Is there a way to get the SP5 for 2008?  Meantime, I updated all the .NET framework items on the local computer (Windows 7 Pro.)

You'd only need SP5 for GP 10.0 if you're trying to put it on SQL 2008 R2, if I remember correctly.

I'd recommend going to the very last release of GP 10.0 which is 10.00.1868.

That being said, if you need SP5 for GP 10.0, open a support case and we can get it to you, otherwise someone in the Community may be able to also.

You won't find it online because Dynamics GP 10.0 hasn't been supported by us since 2017.

    Thanks
