How to Activate a Serial Number in Microsoft Dynamix AX 2012 R3

Hello All...

Please help me .. I want to setting up a New Company in Dynamic AX, but I have a problem to activate a serial number. I have doing a search from blog but I'm still confused about that. From what I'm gained from blogs, firstly I must doing an setup from ‘Tracking dimension groups’ form at Product information management -> Setup -> Dimension groups. Am I right? The picture attached below :

If I'm wrong, someone can tell me the steps how to activate it, Please ?

Hi,

You can do it from Tracking Dimension Groups.

If you cant do it in the form, you can go to the table and put a flag in the field in your record that you need to active.

The question is if you indeed want to have it tracked at packing slip/invoice updates only or that you need full tracking and tracing. Then the serial number is also tracked in the inventory transactions. Can you explain about your required process?

If the question only in the activation of Serial number, you must have had inventory transactions for the items with this tracking dimension group. That's why this field is read-only.

Hi Mr Andre. Firstly, I would like to said thankyou for your respond..

Hmmm.. I think I need to use the serial number for full tracking, tracing, and also can tracked in the inventory transaction. To managing my company inventory. For example to managing the inventory outflow, and also can sort the inventory based on the youngest expiration date.

Which one that I need to use?

If you are working with serial then you have to pick by individual serial number, which means you also need to id each piece so you know which serial you packed which implies a labelling/bar coding system to hold the data.

Batch control may suit you better .Typically a batch refers to a larger quantity e.g. all motors made in a shift or received on the same delivery or from the same order or in the same month, and each item in the batch will have similar properties e.g. same expiry date. A batch may also contain serial numbers of the individual pieces for e.g. warranty purposes.

its not a small topic that can be answered generically in this sort of forum - it needs consulting/training/prototyping relevant to the specific industry need. I suggest start with elearning. there are also a lot of former posts on this topic.

Also note that AMS and WMS don't have exactly the same features so be careful that what you read is relevant to your install.

for new items , just create new tracking dimension group and tick serial
