Hello,
I have some financial reports which are taking longer than others, in some cases 5 mins or more to generate (compared to 10 secs for others).
I would like to know a systematic way to investigate this issue and understand where the bottlenecks are.
Thank you in advance.
Hello DynamicsHampshire,
Without having any other details, I would suspect that the ones that run longer have multiple financial dimensions included whereas the ones that are running faster are based on ledger accounts only.
The complexity of the reporting (many findim account combinations vs. simple findim account combinations) will influence the performance and the time those reports run.
Can you double check that?
Best regards,
Ludwig
Yes, the reports running slower are more complicated and involve complex financial dimension use. The question is how to understand where the bottlenecks are and try to tweak the reports.
As an example, is it possible to download the log for each financial report generation? If I am able to break down the activities somehow to understand which are taking the longest time, that would be very helpful.
Regards,
Hi DynamicsHampshire,
To my knowledge there is not much you can do except trying to use a different design for the complex reports.
As an example instead of adding an account & findim into a row or column definition you can try adding the findims into a reporting tree.
This might somehow speed up the processing time but there is no guarantee for that and you simply need to test this.
Do you have some information on the slow running reports? What kind of reports are they? Can you possibly share some screenprints?
I agree with Ludwig comments, please share the list of reports where you are experiencing performance issues. Are these reports are standard reports or MR reports in D365? On the other side you may consider to run the report through a schedule batch job.

Have you tried viewing the call stack for those reports?
Thank you to everyone for trying to help.
Screenshot 1 is the report which is a combination of main account and consolidation account. This report is taking 2 mins to generate. For this company, we don't have the group accounts stored as a financial dimension and therefore, this is the only workaround which works at the moment.
The purpose of the report is to produce a PL summarised using our consolidated reporting accounts.
I have put the consolidation accounts as account categories (screenshot 2) after making the suitable configuration update in D365. This report is not generating any data. I am not sure why??
In screenshot 3, this is for a company where the group account is stored as a financial dimension value. This report takes 20 secs to generate and is the benchmark for me.
Thanks for the suggestion. How would I run the call stack to investigate performance issues in FR? Can you please point to a web link?
Hi,
If you use an attributes in your report design then I would expect the report to run slower.
Yet, 2 min for such a report is still an acceptable time in my opinion.
If this is too long then try replacing the attribute with a new financial dimension that you create. That is, instead of using the consolidation account field, link all of your account to a 'consolidation account' findim and include it in the report. This should make it run faster.
Is this sorted out?
Can you check the following;
--- How many scheduled batch jobs are running in your environment?
--- Are those batch jobs pushing huge data in D365?
--- Are you facing this in both UAT and PROD or only in PROD?
--- The problem you are facing is only in report generation or during posting any documents too?
--- Monitor a system performance check with the help of any developer to identify if there is any blockage is causing this slow system performance.
Else; better to log a service request with Microsoft so that the team can start checking this.
