Microsoft advises that customers always use the latest cumulative update. I have also talked to another Microsoft partner that does not update customers unless they have a specific problem that would be addressed by the update.
I am wondering what is the right way. Do partners really need to update customers? Is it more effort to update customers than it is really worth? I would be curious to know what others think.

Thank you for your reply. It seems like it is probably a good idea to do maybe every six months from what others have said in this thread. Normally, we haven't been making process of applying cumulative updates because we are worried about breaking the customizations. It also didn't seem certain that there would be any benefits in applying the updates.
As Saurav said there is no point of applying the CU every month because it will increase your workload as well as the customer has to pay monthly. My suggestion is to apply the CU for every 3 months time.
If there is a critical fix that been released then that case you can apply it immediately.
I recommend you to plan a couple of updates every year... and of course if you have an specific problem and that's fixed with a new one.
Hi,
What I Feel is that we should keep our customer to the Latest Rollup but it should not be done on monthly basis.
The reason behind my thought are -
1. You should not apply CU's as they are released because sometime we find some issues with CU's like we had one with CU 19 for NAV 2013 R2.
2. It not to be done month with respect to Cost that Customer need to pay monthly.
3. As its a CU so we can plan with customer that we will apply the Rollups (Latest Rollup) say in every 06 months. It will keep the customer code base updated and the cost will be less.
4. Why its important - As with CU's Microsoft is trying to Keep Same Code Bases with All releases. If we keep the code base to the latest CU it reduces the cost for Upgrade also.
One more thing which I would like to share for the customer / partners for which Local Version of CU's are not released like India (IN) -
As a Partner we should apply (merge) the CU's released for W1, as every localized version of NAV is the Child of W1 Version.
Hope the points above make sense to you.
