Testing Microsoft Enhancements and Scheduled Releases

We are using D365 F&O and before rolling out the Microsoft enhancements or enabling new features into our Prod D365 environment , we have been rolling the new enhancements in our sandbox or testing environment first and going through "testing" in where we test standard out-of-the-box existing D365 F&O functionality; to confirm that the new release won't break our current processes. Do other organizations do this? What do other organizations do prior to rolling out an enhancement into their D365 Prod environment? What is Microsoft recommendation, if they have one, on what needs to be tested within D365 by users, before enhancements are placed in Prod environment?

Yes, your approach aligns with best practices followed by many organizations using Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (D365 F&O).

Testing enhancements in a sandbox or testing environment before rolling them out to production is a common strategy to ensure stability and compatibility with existing processes.

    What other organizations do:
    1. Sandbox Testing: Like your organization, others use sandbox environments to test new features and updates. This helps identify potential issues without impacting the production environment.
    2. Regression Testing: Organizations often perform regression testing to ensure that existing functionalities continue to work as expected after the enhancements.
    3. User Acceptance Testing (UAT): Involving end-users to validate that the enhancements meet business requirements and are user-friendly.
    4. Performance Testing: Testing the system's performance under realistic load conditions to ensure it can handle the expected workload.

    Hi,

Absolutely—what you’re doing is considered best practice.

Most organizations using D365 F&O follow a similar approach: deploying Microsoft updates and enhancements first to a sandbox/test environment, then running regression testing on key business processes. This helps ensure that standard functionality and any customizations still work as expected.

Microsoft also recommends using a Tier-2 sandbox (UAT) for this purpose, and suggests testing:

    • Core business scenarios
    • Critical integrations
    • Customizations and ISV solutions
    • Any workflows or batch jobs

Using tools like the Regression Suite Automation Tool (RSAT) can also help streamline repeatable testing.

    Regards,

    Zain

Yes it's sensible to regression test, especially focus on your key business processes. Automation is your friend, look to automate your regression testing where you can, the effort it saves in the long term is almost always going to be worth the effort to setup.
