SSRS on Dynamics AX 2012

Hello Members,

I am a newbie to Dynamics AX 2012. I need to build SSRS reports on Dynamics AX. I have seen several videos which demo the development of SSRS reports using AOT. Is this the only way to design SSRS reports on Dynamics AX 2012? Is there any other optimized way to develop SSRS reports on Dynamics AX ? Is there a meta data database which is related to Dynamics AX which gets stored on SQL Server (like reportserverdb for SSRS) ? Is this metadata db can be used for SSRS report development ? Please guide me to the right resources which will provide this kind of information.

Thanks in advance!!!

Developing SSRS report for AX2012 is different from normal SSRS report development. In AX2012-SSRS integration, you can develop query-based or RDP-based reports. I don't know of other ways of doing this and the current implementation is so far so good for me.

The following whitepaper provides good information on developing SSRS report in AX2012:

Thanks a lot for your reply dolee for your valuable input. Can you provide me any documentation or any videos that develop the query based SSRS reports ? Is query based SSRS reports development different to development of SSRS reports using AOT ?

I am not sure what do you mean by "development of SSRS reports using AOT" but the whitepaper in the link I provided in my earlier post is a good start to understand how to develop SSRS reports in AX2012.

    Cheers~

I really appreciate for taking your time to provide your valuable inputs.

This link provides steps to create reports using VS 2010 and using AOT and I was referring to this link when I am saying about "development of SSRS reports using AOT"

Is this process same as query based development ? Which procedure (query based Vs RDP)  is the best practice to develop the SSRS reports?

    Thanks!!!!

Yes, that is the same as what I called query-based report earlier, in that you use a query from AOT as datasource.

For RDP basically you create a temp table with the desired schema in X++ and fill in data. Then SSRS will use this temp table as data source for the report. One advantage of using RDP is that you can manipulate the data any way you want before putting them into the temp table.

Both ways are fully supported in Dynamics AX, just use the one that better suit the needs.

    Cheers.
