Embedding a form on external website which generates leads not contacts

Hi team

I'm in the process of embedding a form on an external website, and I need this form to generate leads not contacts.

I have created a form which updates only leads, however the only type of marketing list which I seem to be able to include in a form is a subscription list. And from what I can see subscription lists can only create contacts, not leads. Is that correct??? Surely not

If so, how do I set this up? I would think have a form on a website to generate leads would be a relatively straight forward process however it appears this is not the case :(

The form can is successfully embedded externally however when I submit a test the data does not transfer to Dynamics. The tests also don't work when i submit a test from a Dynamics marketing page. Seeing the form is deigned for leads and the list for contacts i have a fear this will result in a circular path resulting in nothing.

I was one of the first few people in Canada that tried using Marketing when it was first introduced.  Interestingly, I ran into this issue back then.  And it baffled me as well (and I'm a partner).  So, I asked and asked (I had lots of opportunity as it took FIVE MONTHS of support incidents with MS to get the bloody thing finally working!).  I was told that, in MS' experience, marketing efforts have a better throughput when targeted at people/companies that are already at least aware of your company.

I don't have a degree in marketing so I suppose they could be right. Still doesn't make sense to me though.

But Nya's Flow suggestion should work really well to get around this MS design decision.

    Hi Nya,

Thank you for your answer and I'll try your solution. But do you know is what the reasoning behind this behaviour is? A lead is defined as 'a person you did not yet qualify and are not doing business with'. So typically a marketing form is used to generate leads. Why is D365 Marketing not able of adding marketing lists targeted to leads to a form? OR allow subscription lists to create leads instead of contacts. So if your flow works we end up with leads (JeeJ) in a Marketing list targeted at leads! Nice. The only thing is, I can't seem to target that list for a simple mailblast in a customer journey? Only customer segments or Subscription lists:

And when I start from the marketing list and choose to do a quick campaign, the wizard does not allow me to send a pre-made marketing e-mail but instead you need to create the mail in the wizard:

What am I missing?? The flow should be very simple if you ask me: Form -> Lead -> List -> Mail.

Every time I start working in D365, it's things like this that drain my energy in no time.

    Hi Dan,

You can create a flow to achieve it.

For example, here is a flow triggered when a lead is created.

The Source marketing form of the leads created in a certain form will be filled as the name of the form, which can be used as a condition to determine if the lead needs to be added into a marketing list. Or you can customize a field as a flag instead.

If yes, add a “Perform a bound action”. It allows to add the record into a marketing list with the ID of the list.

Of course, please make sure the marketing list is targeted at Lead.

    Hi Nya

Thanks, I perhaps should have specified that I want  the leads who submit the form to also be automatically added to the specified marketing list included in the form.

However as only subscription lists can be embedded in the form, and subscriptions lists seem to be exclusively associated with contacts, not leads, so the user doesn't get added to the list when submitting the form. How can i change the setup so that the leads submitting the form do get added to the marketing list?

    Hi Dan,

It is recommended to create a marketing form whose type is Landing Page to create leads and switch the option “Update contacts/leads” to “Only leads”.

To know more about landing page, please refer to the following doc:

Create a landing page (Dynamics 365 Marketing) | Microsoft Docs

As you created the landing page, it will determine to update or create a lead according to the Matching Strategy you set.

Here is the doc about Matching Strategy.

Configure form matching (Dynamics 365 Marketing) | Microsoft Docs

If this helped you, I'd appreciate it if you'd mark this as a Verified Answer, which may in turn help others as well.

    Best Regards,

    Nya
