MS Great Plains 2013 R2

Does any one know what is the latest version of SQL Server I could use for a MS Great Plains 2013 R2?  I wanted to try and make it work with SQL Server 2019 (using compatibility mode of course), but it looks like the initial launch of GP does not like the newer database version.  Thoughts?

Eric, your only option for SQL is SQL 2014. Is this installation only used to look up historical data and is no longer used in production? SQL 2014 will work fine for years to come. The recommendations for GP 2013 R2 are for W 2012 R2 server.

    Here's what I would do:

    1. Look what modules of GP 2013 R2 are currenlty installed by using Add/Remove Programs, selecting GP 2013, and Change > Add/Remove Features. Make a note of what to install and what to leave unchecked.

    2. Grab the GP 2013 R2 install media from the server it's installed on. Your former consultant should have saved it in a software share somewhere

    3. Take database backups of the Dynamics and GP company databases as well as the CaptureLogins SQL script from the KB article provided already

    4. Copy all of them to a new SQL Server running Windows Server 2012 R2 and SQL 2014 (you can't go newer than this)

    5. Restore the databases and output of the capture logins script

    6. Install the exact same service pack of GP and install the exact same GP modules you were using previously and point it at the new SQL server

If those steps don't work, then you'll need to engage a GP partner.

RE: MS Great Plains 2013 R2

Well, my goal is to get GP 2013 R2 moved over to our new data center and preferably running on a newer version of Windows/SQL Server.  It is currently running on Windows Server 2012 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2.  I'd love to grab the latest version of it, but our support is up since this is now a legacy application for us.

Is your final goal simply to move GP 2013 to the highest level of SQL? Are there any thoughts of upgrading to GP 18.3.1200, which is the latest release? SQL 2014 is the latest release on which GP 2013 can run. What is driving the need to upgrade SQL? What version of SQL are you currently using? Since we are dropping names we do GP upgrades all the time and have all the images ready to go. Feel free to drop me a private message to discuss.

    Eric,

If you haven't done something like this before, it can definitely turn into a pain. I would recommend contacting your GP partner. If you don't have one, I would humbly recommend Velosio :-)

The databases can be migrated along with logins per KB 878449 as mentioned.

For applications themselves, like Dynamics GP, there really isn't any migration, as you'll just need to re-install those application son the new server as needed. For Dynamics GP, make sure it is at the exact same version/build as the databases unless installing a newer version when planning to upgrade.

Also, make sure to install the same modules as currently installed on the current Dynamics GP environment, as needed.

    Thanks

    Derek,

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I'd like to move both the application and database server to new servers.

    Thanks,

    Eric

If you're meaning migrating the databases:

Ok.  This has turned into a pain.  Does anyone have any documentation on a straight migration of GP 2013 to new servers?

Along with all that has been said, you can also run into these type of version errors if a product/feature was installed at a early version (i.e. 8.0, 10.0) and then not installed/upgraded through your current version of Dynamics GP.

Then, you decide you want to install these features again, and Utilities sees version information in the databases where there isn't a direct upgrade path, i.e. you can't go from 8.0 to GP 2013 directly, and would need to be on a specific version/build of GP 10.0 to go directly to GP 2013.

In the cases where there isn't any upgrade path, you can use the information in this blog, to re-initialize the features you need, which will cause GP Utilities to re-install the feature new at your current version, opposed to trying to upgrade it, thus resolving the version errors:
