NAV Setup for monthly renting storage units

I am working with a customer who is looking to implement a Nav solution for their business.

Scenario

1. They have multi city operations and own multiple storage lots in a city. Each location (Storage lot) is divided into multiple variable size rentable spaces.

2. Each location(Lot) will have variable number of spaces based on the size of the lots

3. They want to monitor the P&L at the city level, but at the same time they would like to see if that lot is profitable or not

4. Customer can buy spaces at multiple locations and can get 1 invoice with multiple line items total together.

I need some advice in regards to

1. Should I set each city as a company within Nav

2. Should I set locations as lots , and then spaces as items ?

3. Or Should I set this as service contracts or may be resources.

4. How to take care of the scenario 1 invoice , but with different locations.

I have a technical background in .net, and I am fairly new to the Nav world. Customer isn't looking for a functional resource, and hence I am putting extra efforts to set this up myself

Any advice senior member could offer me in regards to the setup

Thanks in advance,

Good job Kunal, that is the right way to go! Yes, the space then would be a dimension (totalled by lot, location and city). Each resource would then have the dimension assigned. The type of space might be another dimension. You can also assign the price list on resource or resource group.

    Hello Robertas,

Thanks for the explanation. I made the same point to my customer. Seems like he is now convinced for functional consultant looking into it.

But for my own clarification on the point of renting goods. Yes, we are renting not selling. And there is a requirement to quantify the number of spaces within the lot. Also, these individual spaces have further categorization/type such as "Premium - Close to the exit", "Premium - Near the elevator ", Premium - First floor" ,"Standard" etc. The pricing of these spaces are determined by the category/type it belongs to.

Do these thing become dimensions too ?

    Hi Kunal,

first of all let me say that there is little point in setting up the ERP system when you don't have experience in it - there is too much that can be set wrong and at the end all of this effort and licence fee might be seen as a waste because system doesn't work as it should, so I think you should really press on to hire a consultant, even if that is for a few days to help you out. Creating a robust and tailored solution model from a couple of points is merely impossible.

From what you've pointed out, I would have Lot as a dimension, with the structure that includes Storage Location and City, that is, each Lot would be a posting dimension and locations /cities as total dimensions (see the example in Cronus Company of Area dimension). I wouldn't set up items at all, because you normally rent goods, not sell (aren't you?). So all your invoices could be GL only with correct dimension assigned.

You can also use Resources as Lots - they would keep the default dimension so you don't need to enter dimension on each invoice. Your P&L (profitability) then is down to reporting by dimension.

And if you want a single line on the invoice when selling/renting multiple locations, then you can't get away from having multiple lines (however you set the system up), as it has to have the separation by Storage Lot. The only thing you can do is change the document layout to group lines (although do you REALLY need that, I think customers would accept the split invoice). Workarounds possible but then it depends on the volume of such invoices, and other information you want to retain (sales by customer / Lot / City, etc.).
