Static Segment Limitations

Hi,

I find that a static segment is very limited.

When creating a static segment I can only use "contact" entity and use filter options for contact entity only. Then I have to manually check the contact records I want to include in my segment. With results over 100k this not doable.

So is there a way I can use related entities to filter my data, just like in a dynamic segment? And simply include all results in a static segment?

Is it for example possible to (somehow) convert a dynamics segment to a static one, just like marketing list.

And if it's not possible today, when will it be made available?

    RE: Static Segment Limitations

    Hello,

for identifying members for static segment we do offer certain filter capabilities with the filter button above the selection grid of contacts.

But we understand that more advanced members selection capabilities are desired. Like querying by interactions, starting the query traversal from other entities like in dynamic queries, and even using the same capabilities static marketing lists support (lookup, advanced find based add / remove / evaluate).

And we are looking at providing better static marketing audience management in future releases. Please feel free to vote for such enhancements on the Ideas page!

We really appreciate your feedback and it confirms / helps to set the right priorities for our development plan for the next releases!

    Hi Alicos,

Today you can create an extremely simple dynamic segment which does exactly what you have talked about in your scenario for a static segment.  What is the reason that you couldn't use a dynamic segment to accomplish that?  Sorry, not sure what I'm missing here.

    Thanks,

    Megan

Thanks for the Answers, Although I understand and agree that for larger numbers a dynamic segment would be a better option, the limits of a static segment is making it almost useless.

For example a scenario's where you want to define a simple static segment based on a predefined related entity value is not possible.

I was hoping that at least I could use advanced find query like functionality to add/remove members, just like it works with a static marketing list.

    RE: Static Segment Limitations

    Hello Alicos,

Indeed static segments cannot be used to contain 100k members. We want to add large volumes for a later release.

The best way is clearly to compose a dynamic segment that filters the contacts you are interested in. It is really worth the effort to build that, from performance and scale perspective. Dynamic segments allow you to filter as well by lookup relations. You just might need to add the relevant related to the Customer Insight sync in the advanced settings, if not enabled yet. Then you will be able to start your query from the respective related entity and traverse to contact while filtering on the way. This is perhaps a somewhat different approach than in Advanced Find based queries, but works as well.

In the April / May release we will also support filtering on lookup entity attributes, such that you can start the segment query from the contact, select the desired lookup relationship and then filter on lookup entity attributes and then continue filtering on the contact.

N:N relationships are unfortunately not yet supported for segment queries.

You can also build a dynamic segment that references a Marketing lists and loads all members, and this works with static marketing lists. But we recommend building dynamic segments that do all the desired querying themselves.

Bthw: For future releases we are looking at ways to transform a marketing lists into a query with one click, to ease the transition.

    RE: Static Segment Limitations

    Hi Alicos,

We'd be interested to better understand your scenario that is requiring you to use a static segment versus a dynamic segment here, especially given the large number of contacts that you are dealing with.   Today the only way that I am aware you could meet this need is to create a Marketing List and then use the Marketing List in a dynamic Segment.

We are continuing to make a lot of changes to Segmentation and you will see many in April.  But if you have specific feature requests, I suggest that you add them to the Dynamics 365 for Marketing Ideas portal, as voting from the community influences our roadmap and our PMs regularly review the Ideas.

    Thanks,

    Megan
