Hi,

In a contact, there are several options to "Allow" communication.

In this contact preferences field group, there are:

- "Email" option
- "Bulk email" option

Questions:

- Does anyone knows the real difference?
- If a customer register to a newsletter (joins a marketing subscription list), does the do allow email or do not allow bulk email is switch back to allow?

Thank you

RE: "Allow email" VS "Allow bulk email"

    Hello Stephani,

Customer Journey is part of the Marketing module. You can read more about the way emails work with Marketing on this article.

    docs.microsoft.com/.../email-properties

    To quote:

Email: This setting is among the standard fields for the contact record, and is included with nearly all Dynamics 365 applications. Contacts where this is set to Do not allow have indicated that do not want to receive any type of email from your organization, so Marketing will send neither commercial nor transactional messages to these contacts.

Bulk email: This setting is added to the contact record when you install Marketing. Contacts where this is set to Do not allow have indicated that do not want to receive commercial email from your organization, but they may still allow transactional messages. Each contact can enable or disable this option for themselves using any subscription center (all subscription centers provide a check box for controlling this).

How does Bulk E-mail apply to emails sent through Customer Journeys?  From some testing, it appears that Contacts will still receive emails through customer journeys even when Bulk E-mail is set to DO NOT ALLOW.  Would you agree?

You need to allow email as well as bulk email to send newsletters to your subscribers.

Thanks, good to know, thanks for having this on the forum and not giving this information only through personal messages or help hotlines! I had to manage bulk mails now and finish a report about this property for sale in Paphos https://tranio.com/cyprus/paphos/ by this evening, and I wouldn't have had the time to do all of that otherwise...

Great, thank you for you answer. It's clearer now.

RE: "Allow email" VS "Allow bulk email"

    Hello,

The E-mail field restricts ALL types of emails being sent from CRM, no matter how they are sent from CRM. If Do Not Allow is selected for E-Mail, you cannot send an individual email from activities or bulk emails via Campaign activities or Direct E-mail. CRM will not allow any emails to be sent to these records, even if you try to send.

The Bulk E-mail field restricts the sending of only bulk emails. If Do Not Allow is selected for Bulk E-Mail, you cannot send emails that are considered to be bulk emails. Bulk E-mails include emails sent via the Direct E-mail button on the ribbon and emails sent via Quick Campaigns or Campaign Activities. CRM will not allow bulk emails to be sent to these records, but will allow you to send an individual email to this record.

In your scenario where the customer registers for a newsletter, then they would need both settings enabled, as they need to be able to receive emails, and also bulk emails.

    Hope this helps.
